Agreed the days of details scribbled on the back of an envelope have gone.

Especially when you look at the proposed new pirate ship game when the capability of each ship in your squadron changes each turn. And these changes are important to keep track of in a simple way that is very obvious to you opponent. You may have up to 7 ships to control.

For me it depends entirely upon the game's scale.

Skirmish (Song of Blades.., Frostgrave) - get em off the table.

Bigger "Warband skirmish" - eg the Dan Mersey Games - removal works well if singly or 1-2-3 based.

Battle size (Hail Caesar, Black Powder) - I prefer to mark the hits since reduced stands compromise recognisable formations on the battlefield.
