Big Mike and i had a game of Longships the other day. The fact i had not payed the game for 6 months, hi-lighted the need to keep rules simple enough for players to "get on" with the game without too much reading.
I was defending and lost my initial (only unit on table) unit to a catastrophic fight in which half the unit was slaughtered in the first turn.  My reinforcements took another 4 turns to arrive! This was due to rolling 20 D6 for reinforcement and only getting 1 or 2 5,6 scores each turn.  terrible. In the penultimate turn a unit of my men appeared and smashed a hole in Mike's saxon line. then I got stabbed in the back and destroyed.  A total disaster. It was still a good game because i did have a chance at redeeming teh game up until the final couple of turns. Mike set fire to two villages too,

Lessons learned.
1. Do not commit the only on table unit to a fight too soon. fall back and wait a bit longer.
2. Watch out for skirmishers.  shoot them.
3. Try to get the villages very spread out.

Oh yes, roll high too.

Good game thanks to Mike!

It's good to hear some of the oldwr games being played amongst the frenzy of 'Nam playtesting  ;)

My favourite games at the moment are Regiment of Foote and Civil War Battles.
