German LW v Russian LW.
Russians attacking

Russians had 3 platoons, an engineer platoon and a pair of JS2s.  All average
Germans had 3 platoons and a pair of Panthers. All average.

Russians amassed a big attack on German left flank (foot platoon plus engineer platoon). This got chewed up by morale and German MGs.

Russians also attacked on German right flank.
Germans got shot to pieces but lead Russian platoon also died.
Second Russian platoon hacked through and slaughtered remaining german right flank.

In the game centre the two panthers had a short range duel with the 2 JS2s.
A total of 14 shots were fired.
The Russians were unlucky as they lost both of their JS2s.

The game ended with the two lone panthers with zero German infantry anywhere in sight.

A big win for the Russians.
A most enjoyable game.

martin :)

PS
Notes
In one event HE got lots 12 hits but only 1 Russian died. They are good at hugging the ground.
Russians in big crowds suffered in one place but not in another. Therefore it is probably a risk worth taking?
German panzershrek did very little due to the closed scenery. Difficult to whizz around the table.

Scenery total = 3 buildings, 4 woods,3 marshes, 2 gentle hills. Very few good arcs of fire. Fine.

Colonel Kilgore

Sounds good, chaps.

Are we still treating engineer platoons as "specials", to be used by mutual agreement?

JS2's are fearsome creatures!

Well done to the German cats  :)

Engineer platoons.
We need to test them more
At the moment I think they can be used by anyone if they wish.
they can only have 7 bases which seems not too powerful?

Those JS2's Sean are held in contempt by my Panthers as they have  very poor welding. Not like the perfect German seams.

Most people I have fought against who have used an engineering platoon have only done so to use a flamer. There seems to be no other reason to do so. I am not up on the deployment of flamers within a force. Would it only be engineers that used them? The satchel charges are useful but do not justify the use of an engineering platoon, in my opinion.

That's one of the reasons I put that book up as a possible resource on "Flammers" thread. Might be a very valuable read ?

John,

One reason to field them could be to use up spare points on a small unit that fields a relatively high proportion of assault weapons (SMG, LMG, plus the flamethrowers, of course)?

You are right John. The purpose of using an engineer platoon is to get the flame throwers that is fine and intended.
The word engineer is an overall title. Different armies call them different things. Pioneers, assault, combat etc.

In the present  rules they are not a game winner (yet to be extensively tested I agree).

I have taken part in 11 games with flamers so far.
Probably needs another 10 before things are settled?
Folk need to try them out in some games in order to get a good grip on how they work(?)

Amy play testing results are always of interest to everyone here.

I used an engineer platoon last night.
7 bases.
2 flamers, 1 officer, 2 rifles, 2LMGs.
They pushed back a group of 2 foot bases.
Then they carried out an assault and got slaughtered.
They lasted 2 turns. :(

Colonel Kilgore

In the interests of research and play-testing, I'm happy to give my Late War German Engineer platoon a go at our January PBI day, if my opponents are happy for me to do so?

Simon

martin goddard

Please do Simon.
Everyone can, if they like.
That would give some good intense play testing.
