Not having won many games I still think my ideas for tactics must be excellent (possibly? ::))

Cavalry
If using cavalry choose a stream because it is easy for cavalry to cross it.
Bunch up the tough scenery into just two columns.
If opponent has cavalry do opposite to above.
Cavalry will not beat a standard foot ward. Only attack weak foot wards. Unless really desperate, then attack anything.

Hills
Hills are very valuable. More valuable than a cold can of Lilt on a   warm day. Not more valuable than a Pepsi Max on a scorching day in the desert.
Being on a hill will "save" wards that might have terrible morale.
A hill is worth victory points for defenders.
Hills are good in fights too.
Get them in your first two rows.

Zone forward
Use this to grab a nearby hill or set up a rapid attack advance.
Defenders can still launch assaults if they want.

Intense shooting
Use this a lot if you are the attacker because you will be fighting soon enough.

Levy
Leave the levy all together (not naked) in some minor scenery or lesser role. Otherwise they "let down" the zones they are in.

Unreliable generals
They can be a real let down, but often fight well. Extra victory points too.

Off table units
Give priority to Generals and big retinue units.

Zones
Pay attention to zone ownership. You need MORE than 4 bases combined to claim a zone.

Shooting
Accept an average roll.

This is really useful, Martin, thanks. I particularly struggle with scenery placement if I've not played a given ruleset in a while.

I have a couple of questions:

1. What do you mean by a "big Retinue unit", given that all units start off the same size?
2. How valuable, in Bloody Barons terms, is a frozen Slushy on an August Bank Holiday?

Big retinue = 3 or more bases. It might recover to 3.5  as well.
The rules clearly state that a frozen slushy is +1 in a fight but +2 on any bank holiday not just August.

To be a "better unit" needs 3.5 bases. If the general joins the unit he can make a  2.5 frontage  into 3.5 which makes a good difference.

Thanks for clarifying both points, Martin.
