Our War of Spanish Succession flags ranges at 1:100th, 1:72nd and 1:56th scales keep growing steadily - today, by the addition of the colours for another Two Crowns' Spanish unit: Jaén I.R., another well-known regiment in the Spanish Army of that time. Along with the flags, I've also released a PDF guide on the subject for free download, as usual.

After this release, the above mentioned flag ranges comprise now 10 Two Crowns' Spanish regiments, 7 Austrophile Spanish regiments, another 6 late war Catalan regiments and 4 Portuguese flag designs. Besides, a fourth 1:144th scale range is going to also grow soon, beyond the current 2 Two Crowns' Spanish, 2 Catalan and 1 Portuguese flag sheets - containing three pairs of flags each.

These are all very nice, Lluis, but we need a decent range of 15mm figures to attach your lovely 1:100 flags to  ;)

Would I be right in thinking that the WSS uniforms don't differ too much between nations / regiment, so that a small range of largely "generic" figures would work? Or is that wishful thinking...?

I'd say that uniforms were pretty compatible all around Europe for the most part - at least regarding the bulk of their infantries.

There were some minor differences here and there, of course - but not just among nations, but even among regiments of a same army! At the risk of breaking some taboo, I would consider most of such differences as neglectable - with perhaps a possibly significant exception relative to ammo pouches, either belly placed like in Spain or Russia, or hanging from a shoulder strap like most the other countries; when building my own WSS armies, I've even neglected this latter feature. If following such kind of approach, then Dixon's 15mm are a best choice.

More distinct were grenadier uniforms, if willing to include such figures in your armies. The look of Spanish, French, Catalan, British, Portuguese or Austrian grenadiers was quite different among them and own to each army. But it all could be abstracted into three different overall patterns: high mitre caps (protestant countries), low mitre caps (catholic countries) and large fur caps (Austria, Bavaria and Portugal). The best source for your armies would probably be Minifigs, IMHO.

Same for horse, with few exceptions such as the Austrian helmeted cuirassiers, the very first Hussar units in French, Austrian and Catalan armies or the slightly distinct headgear of some Dragoons in France and Spain.

Overall easy, I think  ::)

Thanks for this useful insight, Lluis - very helpful.

Now here I am thinking that both Dixon and Minified are quite old sculpts...  ;)

The old Dixon figures are Mark Copplestone sculpts so hold up really well. They are slight in comparison to modern 'giants'

Always been interested in WSS, but never taken it further for wargaming. Any 15mm ranges or rulesets to suggest?

Nick

Here are some Dixon I did reasonably recently (as there are no pictures on their website)

Colonel Kilgore

That's a lovely job, Simon!

What rules do you use?

Simon

they go up to 1721, with this list set

Full disclaimer - these are my rules  8)

Colonel Kilgore

Ah - of course! I didn't realise that they extended so far in time.

I've heard that they're a very good rule set  :D
