Just to start some discussion, here is mechanism 1 from SSPBI.
Of course things will change .
This is not the final set of rules.
It is in fact a new set that will mature fully (?) over the period of a year.

Here goes
Mechanism 1 concerns which of the two companies becomes the good guys.
Each player rolls 4D6 ( no re-roll)

Cumulative modifiers
+2 if raw
+2 if British or US
+2 if earlier than other opponent
+2 if German with Russian opponent

Highest score is the company used by the good guys.
The bigger the margin, the more the good guys get at game start ( like scouting in PBI).

Thus the game begins.

So this is on the basis of both players each bringing a full company along, with the "good guys" being the active force that the players will share and the bad guys being the passive / game controlled force, presumably?

Yes Simon.
This would however get rid of my original idea of each player controlling a single platoon on a 2(vet) 3 (average) and 4 (raw) basis.
But that is the way intense play testing goes.
