Have you used cannon balls as part of the bases or markers  in your ACW gaming?

I did once, but it rolled off the table and hurt someone's foot  ;D

Can I recommend small ball bearings instead?

Yes,
A small pile of cannon balls (or even ball bearings) makes a good ammunition marker for artillery.

You can only really use them as spent cannon balls, maybe next to a casualty, as they were attached to a sabot prior to loading. I think I did use them once when I had some green stuff left over from some modelling,

Amen, Andy,
Generally the widespread use of sabots and all-in-one shot from the Napoleonic Wars has passed most people by...

There is also the famous photo from the Crimea showing the valley strewn with spent cannon balls.

Derek the best are craft beads.

I've got into the habit of rolling my own with any left over Milliput etc. after a day's modelling... ideal for all those late Medieval non-standard calibres etc. You'd need a shedload though for something like this... https://collections.royalarmouries.org/object/rac-object-6177.html
