Fire on a ship/boat

Myself and John actually had half a game the other day. So much to go thru if you haven't played for a while ?
Anyway during play an interesting possible came up.
One of my Boats, General Price came face to face with the Virginia. Obviously I was losing.
But I thought ram her !
Anyway the Virginia was towing a fire ship but managed to sort of avoid it, after it was released.
To avoid the hex I was in with the fire ship and the shore line on one side; the Virginia went sideways to me so I managed to ram her.
So it's a 2 part question sort of ?  As a Critical I went thru one and the roll set the GP on fire anyway.
So my question is: If you ram or get rammed and one of you is on fire ? Will this effect the other ship at some point in the game ? Or could it possibly effect the other ship at some point ? If so how ?

As fire has no friends only enemies will it just spread ?

Sounds  a"hot" game Miles.
Critical fires only affect the ship they are on.
This is because the fire is usually  down below.
If you hit afire ship you may end up with multiple fires I think.
