That's the next thing I've been pondering, from what I can tell they seem to have been painted grey the same as the backpack.

I have found an alternative possible solution, having popped into a model railway shop yesterday. 0.3mm nickel silver wire, for less than the price of a dustpan and brush. It may also persuade me to add flagpoles to my HI ships in due course.
