Here is a train I set up and used in a CWB game.
If I remember rightly we treated the railway line like a wall in the rules.
Colin beat the pants off me that day.

Great picture Miles.
Is that when wargames were conducted with several players?

I agree with Stewart, that's a lovely set up, Miles!
As to Martin's train length predicament, I don't see a problem with the train itself being considered a major obstacle - In many places it would be the only hard cover for miles. There must be a mechanism for interpenetration by friendly troops that would resolve it.
Even the most rudimentary of tracks was effectively a continuous 'W' shaped field defence with the central track bed flanked by drainage ditches and borrow pits... at the very least it should be considered like crossing a major linear obstacle.
The only solution to reducing train length I can see is to downscale the train and track as I have seen some gamers do to N gauge in the same manner as using smaller groundscale buildings to represent villages etc. for FIBUA. That would allow for a smaller train length but the scale difference would prevent the interaction with the ground troops. The cost of Railway Modelling equivalents would be in an altogether higher price bracket (that's if you could source suitable representative trains for the different gaming periods).

That's a very nice setup Miles. The scenery is particularly effective.

Del Prado N guage trains can be sourced from ebay for between 4 and 10 pounds.  Can't get a pound sign on this computer.

From what I see after a 5min trawl you can get 'The General' but the Japanese C50 is too late (1929) while the French PLM Bourbonnais is too early... there may be others out there though... then there's the rolling stock, but it is an option.

This was the game that me and Colin played at the last Fisticuffs, and we had played at Beachead that year also. It was a game designed to show off and promote CWB at shows. The main objective was the warehouse complex in the middle of the board. I have now set my eyes on a better warehouse type building, as I used the FoW  factory. Played on a 6 x 4 table so it looked good; The Train was really there for show, hence why we classed the railway line as a Wall/Fence.
I could bring this table set up for WWW, 4 player and 900 points if people wanted it? You still have the 3 objectives but the big one is the Warehouse full  of goodies in the middle, as the main objective is to re supply your side. You play the game as normal, but the scenery is set up already the rest is done as per book, it would be mid war/late war Eastern and it's better to have the defender the camera side but that's not essential.
