Do you mis read words?

When scanning text quickly it is often  my habit to make assumptions.
Therefore I might read horse as house  or direction for detection etc.
This is mainly because I am rushing for efficacy (read 2 out of 3 words to get general meaning) .  Also a sign of age slowing me down.

Do you mis-read texts?

Having spent most of my working life reading and writing reports I can confirm that everyone does. Particularly when speed reading or scanning your own work for errors the brain reads what it expects to be there and will happily skip over errors.

Apparently, most people scan the first and last few letters of a word and the brain fills in the rest:

I am a slow reader and so I tend not to misread things. I'm the annoying git who will read a 500 page book and spot the one typo that the proof readers missed. However that does not stop me mis-understanding things or forgetting them.

I'm guilty of being a scanner.  I blame the computer screens and tablets.   When I really need to read something properly at work I force myself to slow down by silently reading aloud to myself.
