Basing a Dervish army

I'll soon be making a start on the Dervish army and have a couple of more queries, any suggestions / clarifications greatly appreciated.

Leaders – from the photos it appears that leader bases are indicated by having the leader figure with only one other figure.  Is this what people use?

How do players distinguish unit quality?  I'm going to use the Fuzzi-Wuzzis as veteran and had planned on indicating average troops with a flag until I realised that flags have their own significance in the rules.  The Dervishes always have to have one poor unit so I'm wondering about painting the bases slightly differently but any suggestions for something more flexible (I might want two poor units) would be appreciated.

Speaking of Dervish flags, page 5 says "Dervish with a flag on a small base".  Is this meant to be a standard bearer on his own on eg a coin or can he be included on an ordinary (3 x 3) base with couple of other figures as an infantry base?

And, as a sidetrack, the victory point table refers to captured flags but I can't see how they can be captured.  My suggestion would be if the base was killed in a fight (if it's part of an infantry base) or, if a separate base, if the unit it is with is routed from a fight.

Brian,
All mine are 3 figure bases, I have a standard on leader bases.

The flag base referee to in the rules is a separate base, I use a single figure on a 1p base,
It is given to a base for the game.
If that base is killed then another base in at unit can pick it up, if the unit is destroyed then the British unit can pick it up.
If left unattended then it is lost from the game.
This is the base for vp's

As to quality I tend to Remember and use my army list. You normally only have about 6 units.
In other rule sets we use 4,3 &2 figures for raw, average & vet but this restricts you to the same force unles to make extra bases. That's why all my bases are the same but will look at putting a small marker with the unit for clarity.

Hope that helps?

Brian, I have ordered a pack of eagles (vet) and dogs (average) to put with units for quality

Thanks Stewart.  I could identify an average unit has having a standard on the same base as the leader and for a raw unit just have the leader with other 'bods'.  I could then mount a standard bearer on a 1p coin for a 'paid-for' standard.

I think my Dervish army will only have 4 or 5 units but I like things such as quality to be clear.  It'll likely be the same sort of problem with the Anglo-Egyptian force (Camel Corps in my case).  I may just have then all the same quality!
