I particularly like the little bits of scenery on the bases, which really help with the "3D" look.

Good luck with the Germans - please share photos here (as I plan to do some in due course, but maybe some Early French first...?).

Will do. I have the first infantry battalion based up and awaiting the modelling paste. Meanwhile I am still experimenting with colours. I have come across yet another reference for early war Germans, this time in the guidebook to the Thiepval Memorial, which shows the German infantry in grey tunic with a hint of green and darker pure grey trousers. This is a combination I really like but I will experiment mixing colours on a palette to see what it looks like when dry. I will need to go fairly light as I like to use washes at the end of the process.
