Good books. they are mostly still available too.

I have honestly never heard of the Shire books. I must look them up.

I got most of mine when they were often stocked by gift shops, usually in their own carousel like Osprey books. Unlike Osprey they are much smaller and cover every subject under the sun.

Shire books can be very useful, both from the descriptions (often very details) and the illustrations. They do both "Living Histories" and "Archeology" series.

My latest purchase (as I was pondering all things Anglo-Saxon & Viking) was this one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/cka/Anglo-Saxon-England-400-790-Living-Histories-Sally-Crawford/0747808368

Also proved useful for kiddies' school projects!

The cover alone looks great!

That's why I posted it :)

Lots of detail about clothes (e.g. which were the most common colours for Anglo-Saxon cloth), way of life etc, with photos of reconstructions: hence the "living history" bit. Not a wargaming title per se, but rather handy for making terrain and painting figures.

That's a very useful looking title, thankyou.
