Today is bevrijdingsdag in the Netherlands. Off out in about 15 minutes to see the parade of WWII vehicles. My home town, Delfzijl, was one of the last places to be liberated in the Netherlands. Yesterday was Rememberance Day. Very moving ceremony from Dam Square on TV yesterday evening, with laying of wreaths by citizens and notables, ending with children laying flowers in front of the wreaths. Also on TV the ceremony from Appingedam, the neighbouring town, think Liverpool/Bootle, thats how close Delfzijl and Appingedam are. Again very moving with the interviewing of children who survived the holocaust. Quite harrowing in places. My son's work colleague told him of her grandmother. The Canadians were only two hours away from liberating her home town, Holwierde, about 5 kilometers from here. A group of girls ran into a barn to keep out of the way for these last couple of hours, but a German soldier saw them and tossed a grenade in after them. My son's colleague's grand mother was the last in, the grenade causing flying splinters, one of which caught her in an eye costing her the sight in that eye.

In St Peter Port, Guernsey, this week. There are things going on all week but the big day for them is Friday 9th May which is the 80th anniversary of their liberation. There is a military parade, live music, funfair, children's events, a 300 vehicle parade and fireworks amongst other things. Starts 0930 and finishes 12 hours later. Should be good.
