I think the day went really well.
12 players gives a good mix of opponents too.
The games got done quite quickly which reflects well on the players and the rules.

The armies present on the day =
2x Imperial romans
Carolingians
Vikings
Anglo Danes
2x Macedonians
Greeks
Britons
Germans
Pontics
??

Agreed Martin.

The rules are smooth and give a very enjoyable game. I had only played once before, but got through both of games in good time.

I'm playing again tomorrow night and looking forward to showing off the rules to Ade!

How did the various armies do?

Did any trends emerge in terms of favourite stratagems or certain armies doing better than others?

Did any of Martin's headlong charges work?

Martin was helping out in game one advising Nigel, Alan and me in our battle of Greeks v Germans.

The Greeks attacked and in truth massacred the Germans.

In the afternoon, my Germans defended again but gained a small win against Chris' Pontic army which had a lot of armoured veteran cavalry, scythed chariots and a mix of spear armed foot troops. I felt like I used my skirmishers much more effectively in the second game, tying up Chris' right flank with a fighting withdrawal and using mounted skirmishers on my right flank to harass Chris' advancing troops.

As is often the case, Chris was unlucky with repeated assaults by his heavy cavalry. When both sides are rolling 15 or 16 dice with a reroll, it is a difficult ask to win combats as the attacker. The rerolls create a good point of decision, especially  if you have a fighting general who guarantee 4 huts.

It's clearly important to choose your fights and try to stack the advantage in your favour. Nit easy though!

My Vikings picked their hills and stood firm against the Pontics and the massed British. Started running out of men towards the end in both games though but struggled on to victory twice.

Ben rolled a games length of very bad rolls in the second game though.
