I am having great pleasure putting the lovely ACW figures into armies. Such a large range I fear I may sound an ungrateful pain, but one pack I would want to buy would be Confederate in Frock Coat and Hat marching or advancing.

The reason is that I am following the more modern ideas that many state regts at least began and were occasionally renewed with issued uniforms. So far less variations in those units. I am fine at present using frock coat and Kepi but a dark grey hat and frock coat would open up quite a few more.

The illustrations I was looking at are in the huge 'Rebels and Yankees - Battlefields of the civil war' not easy to copy but I think this site gives a good idea of a single States coats.

I'm no expert on ACW uniforms but wouldn't packs 1 and 2 on the Union list do for the job if painted correctly.
Just an idea.

John, you are absolutely right. I have a pack in my last order and got them out - they are perfect. I can't believe why I missed them,    Thank you so much for your help.

Martin, I am sorry to have stupidly overlooked your clear listing, I hope I have not wasted much of your time.

I'll shut up now and get back to painting,

John P,

As penance, you will have to share the results of your labours here.

Photos of about 6 different States' coats should do the job nicely  ;D

There has indeed been a lot of research over the past couple of decades to refute the idea that most confederate soldiers were dressed in ragged brown clothing or with huge numbers wearing captured Federal blue pants.Once again, Hollywood has not helped. The worst dressed Confederates were in the hard fought late summer campaigns in Virginia and Maryland in 1862 when the original uniforms and home made clothing of the early war was wearing thin but the distribution of Confederate Quartermaster Issue had not got properly underway.

Yes this is an interesting example where the ragged Reb image has been debunked. A bit like the western front was all mud and shell holes.

The new 28mm Rebs from Warlord have really annoyed me (I meet to get out more!) Their painted 28mm Rebs are all in blue trousers, with sky blue cuffs and hat bands.

It's a bit like a Lost Cause/Gone with the Wind image of a Confederate  unit.

Don't recall much in the way of Confederate soldiers in Gone with the Wind. The ball at the start of the film was good in that it showed the overblown uniforms of Confederate officers in 1861 before any real fighting had happened, and the wounded in Atlanta who were at the end of the very tough Atlanta campaign, so should have looked a bit of a mess. For my money one of the worst offenders was The Horse Soldiers which showed an absolute mass of raggedy  Rebs, who were operating well behind the front lines in 1863, when Confederate Quartermaster Issue would have been running relatively smoothly.
