Raw v average game tonight

Average Germans 1940 attacking raw French 1940.

The French started with 4 tanks and 1 platoon.
The Germans started with 3 platoons.

There was a lot of smoke made by Ben. 7 squares at one point.
The German assault on an objective was very bloody. The French killed 6 bases and the Germans killed 4. French had 18D6, Germans 25 D6.  This crippled the German flank assault.

The French tanks (4 of)did good work harassing the advancing German infantry.
These tanks were also responsible for securing two objectives just by being around.

Both company commanders died.

A big win for the raw French because the Germans ran out of manpower.
The raw were OK with losing 1AP in defence , but would have trouble assaulting with the -1AP I think.

Yes it was a good game, however the EW Germans lacked anti tank fire power and they found it hard to avoid the four French tanks. The two Panzer IIs are good mobile machine gun platforms but have no anti tank capability so are easy meat for the French tanks. Perhaps upgrading them to Panzer III would be better. I tend to build pretty vanilla armies around three foot groups, couple of tanks and a support group as this should give a good balanced company for a pick up game.

 We played the game in about 2 hours 30mins, but we were four experienced players. The challenge for Martin is to produce a set of rules playable within three hours as this is about the time scale most people have to spare of an evening. Must be getting close now.

The French tanks certainly changed the game a lot.
We need to try this out again .  ie  One side has tanks and the other has no AT foot or gun tanks.

I think the French had some "bon chance"?

You are quite right Chris that the 3 hour box is a vital aim.

What type of French tanks were they?

4 x S35 Somua  gun 7 armour 6 which is good for 1940.
They held up the attackers  whilst we tried to get the reinforcements on quickly.

I've played little Early War, but have the feeling that there can be more subtleties with the relatively less powerful weapons than in later periods
