Cork bark

Cork bark has long been a favourite for making rough hills out of.
I went on Amazon and found a big piece listed as "for lizards" pet store.
For  just £9 I have a  big (12" long) tube of bark.
It is the same as that sold by modelling companies.

I am using it to make some textured slices on some hills.
It will still be painted.

I could never make the 'strata' of the cork look convincing... I've made up a couple of flat backed vertical cliff sections capitalising on the slight curvature of the bark chunks and added foam scree at the base to make a Monument Valley/ Wadi Rum like cliff but that's as close as I've got to successfully harnessing this material...

I usually use EPS chunks, PVA and paper towel and dress it with carved Styrofoam strata...

That sounds like a good price, Martin. I've seen very silly prices for bark at times.

I've been thinking of using this for some time for rough hills and rough ground. I think I'll pick some up.

Cork bark is used in Spain to make Christmas scenes and decorations. I got a huge piece for not a lot a few years ago. So if you just happen to be on you're winter holidays...keep your eyes open.

Well I found a small piece in my hobby box. I've now made a couple of rough hills for Bloody Barons. They're drying at the moment before I flock them but I'll put pictures up when done.

Next big problem is whether to paint it dark grey with light grey hi-lights. Alternatively to paint it brown with sandy hi lights.

Well that turned our rather nicely! I like the way that the grass continues up to the cliff edge that would have crumbled away.
