How was the test play game last night?

Thanks for asking Les
We agreed to ignore the latest suggestion from martin as being too time consuming.
Instead veteans only claim their +1 bonus when shot at from short range.
The games still seem to favour the veteran player.

Had an enjoyable game against Martin and Mike last night. Martin and Mike were veteran nationalists I trained republicans (peninsular army) - the nationalists  being Veteran only had two platoons of infantry and bought a couple of medium tanks, MMGs and extra foot bases. I had three average platoons bought medium tanks, MMGs, a couple of field guns and two extra LMGs. I won the pre game but the difficulty in facing veterans is that attack or defend they are always going to have their two platoons on. I decided to attack, if I defend I would have had two smaller average platoons facing off against two large veterans and praying for reinforcements. In the pre game I didn't win any of the road moves and only moved two of the seven scenery pieces the defenders managed to move five of the seven partials. This resulted in the republican army pretty much having to attack veterans across open country. My luck continued when my two tanks were hit by HE and I threw double one on saves!

The difficulty in attacking across such an open front is trying to get in any charges, in fact the whole game only saw three charges the only successful one being the asset shock assault.

Despite doing very badly (this is my fifth game four of which I have lost by the maximum the other just scraping in above the maximum loss - says something about my gaming ability!) it was an enjoyable game. I think the three square motivation works well, shooting and movement is simple. I'm not sure people are using many of the assets - perhaps I should have used smoke last night. Both sides tend to go for HE, as the attacker I went for shock assault and gifted leader, defenders had aeroplane (Martin has one therefore insists on using it) not sure what the third was.

Veterans remain a bit of a conundrum, they tend to win so may need to be tampered with a bit more although to be honest my futile attempts last night did not rally test them much (I think they lost less then ten bases to my 30+).

Perhaps what is required is a kind of test 'average' game board where the scenery etc is pre placed so we can test veteran, trained and raw attacking and defending?

As Bruce Forsyth would say 'good game, good game'. Looking forward to the armored trucks.

Sonds like you all had an enjoyable game.

Veterans and 6 sided dice are often a problem in howto create a balance between  the different qualities veteran, average, raw.

Martin thought that the armoured cars and trucks might make a bit of difference.
