I've often thought that myself Derek.  I've always pictured dark age, medieval battles, in my mind at least, to be massive soccer lout brawls.

Very much so, and the troops  probably approached each other in a much more tentative manner than most wargamers appear to  assume

Have you tried Dan Mersey's Dux Bellorum. Tentative is very much the order of the day as you your troops' confidence to engage the enemy.

I've always thought fhat the Holywood image of the full in charge of two lines smashing into one another is probably unlikely. Can you imagine the average barbarian in the front rank, facing down a formed line of legionaries? If it was me, I'd by trying to skulk towards the rear ranks.

Moggy

Maybe throwing the smaller warriors over the top of the shields then lol

Rather good. I wish I'd put my armies on bigger bases.

I do it in 28mm with units on 100mm wide bases. Unfortunately I sold my early Saxon Army to a mate before leaving the UK and was horrified to see he had taken them off my diorama bases and based them individually for Saga, a set of rules I just cannot be doing with. Will have to redo it to face my Britons.
