Now that the parachute canopies and German canisters are out, I've been struggling to find out/remember what colour 'chute signified what type of canister content. I felt sure that Beevor's book on Crete mentioned this near the beginning, but I've not managed to find the passage again.

Does anyone have any sources that can help out, please?

Thanks Les,

I may be missing something here - this just looks like a Google search on "german parachute canister on crete" (one of many sets of parameters I've already tried). Did you find anything specific?

Take a look at 'Fallschirmjager Regiment 2', they have some decent info. This group are re-enactors.

Yes it comes up with a coloured picture of the container.
And there are several other pictures.
My search engine from France comes up with lots of information, when I use German parachute canister on Crete.

Ah - I understand the confusion.

I'm looking for the colour of the parachutes (which I understand varied by container content), not of the containers themselves.

May I suggest contacting a German museum? There must be a German version of our Parachute museum somewhere ? If not a good museum on Crete ?
Tell them what your doing and go from there ?

Aha! The killer line I was looking for is:

"Food and supply canisters had white parachutes, medical supplies had yellow chutes, weapons and ammo, green parachutes."

Many thanks for hunting that down, Neil!

No problem, I have to confess it was the first search result......  8)

I had found that thread a while back but since there is no reference or quotation, I kept looking.
