British Empire WWI uniform question.

After all these years I learnt that Australian artillery crews on the western front wore riding breaches as part of their uniform.  I don't know why but I'm quessing this is because artillery and horses went hand in hand.  My question to the group -  did British and other empire artillerymen also wear riding breaches instead of trousers?

From An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Uniforms of WWI (Lorenz Books - bought through Amazon) - re. British artillery.

Field artillery - the gunners wore TROUSERS and puttees, only the drivers wore BREECHES and puttees. Breeches were the same colour khaki as the trousers.

Horse artillery - all wore BREECHES with either leggings or puttees. Officers wore BREECHES with either puttees or stohwasser leggings. Mostly the breeches were the same khaki as the rest of the uniform, but some officers may have worn privately purchased breeches in the more buff coloured cavalry twill. All horse artillery wore spurs and a white lanyard at the left shoulder, like their cavalry counterparts.

Hope this helps.

Excellent information Leman.  Many thanks.
