The Battle of Budapest has now been completed with the Soviets pulling back having suffered considerable casualties.

A few observations:

    * In a six-turn game the time elapse had reached 11, there had been four '1's rolled
    * We found it helpful to have both the PBI 2 & 3 rules available as in a few situations being able to cross-read the rules clarified points; it was also interesting to see the differences and choose which we considered more appropriate
    * Our general impression was that the game leaned heavily towards having an attacker roll a lot of dice seeking '6's with the defender subsequently trying to avoid rolling '1's in response in making saving rolls; closing to melee by moving into the open of course changed that
    * By accident we found the defender was advantaged in having units intermingled and spread out along the same frontage, which allowed him to pick and choose which group might suffer the casualty; having to roll different action dice was not an issue in coordinating defence although it would complicate attacks!
    * Pinning seemed to adhere to a base but which we thought might be more usefully put on a square. The essence of combat is presumably squad A fires at the enemy to encourage them to keep their heads down while squad B sprints forward, then the roles are reversed; we could not see how that would work but perhaps the environment was too urban

Many thanks to all for their input.

FWIW my 'vote' would be for a table of suggested terrain for each campaign setting.

Mine is a Renault Twingo, currently unavailable in the UK as far as I am aware. It is a small runabout approximately the same sort of size as an Aygo and more room in the back than a Fiat 500. Charging has to be done at public charge points as I live in a flat, but this is not a problem in the Netherlands.
Running costs vary as the battery goes further in warmer weather. Cold winter weather approx 130Km on full charge. Middle of summer up to another 100Km. There is a useful low battery light on the dashboard that kicks in at 20%. Can get up to around 90% charged after about 50 minutes. Usually go for a walk with the dog, shopping or a coffee when it is charging.

Longest journey so far has been a 180km round trip into Germany. Car was charged at the destination and again about 3/4 of the way back on a fast charger just to be on the safe side. Fast charger gave a half hour break for a coffee. There is an eco mode, which I always use, which  means the car cannot go above 106kph.

Many thanks.  Very interesting; not available in the UK, as you said.  Presumably we have BREXIT to thank for that as we are no longer in the market so they are required to service the UK.  I have my eye on the Renault Zoe but am open to all information and ideas; we will be taking a hard look at the market next week.  Minimum endurance for us is 200km in adverse weather.

In respect of speed limiting does that mean higher speeds require disproportionate power input so, as with fossil fuels, you get a lower mileage the faster you go?  How big a hit is temperature variation?

Will high fuel prices change your game travelling habits?

martin :)

I think that might depend on how high the price goes.  I had already factored in a 160p fuel price into the 2022 budget so currently the situation is manageable but I do, surprisingly for a Londoner, a 50 mile round trip for a game.  This represents a significant cost.

The greater concern is how matters in the Ukraine develop.  Our hobby means we are all aware of how wars develop and spread following a logic of their own.  Evidently President Putin does not, failing to appreciate that what happens in a few small states in the Caucasus Mountains does not reflect what will happen in starting a war in Eastern Europe involving a major country.  Presumably with pressure mounting on raw material costs as well as energy, the price of figures will be rising too!

No, as I don't currently play away from home, but I did buy an electric car last year - and yes, I do expect electricity costs will rise too owing to gas fired power stations.

As the Mayor of London is in the process of forcing all of Greater London to go electric I would be interested in learning more, such as which car!

The Battle of Budapest continues.

(1) In what circumstances would choosing PIN be of greater interest than a KILL?
(2) What is the current thinking on (defender) reinforcement rolls?  Should there be a roll to check if they arrive and if they do another roll on where or are they all assumed to arrive but a check made on where?
(3) Having a D6 for a time elapse means that a game might last anywhere between 4 and 21 turns, which seems to give a wide spread off possible outcomes, even if 6 turns is the average.  Have people got alternatives?  We thought about using an average dice, which would at least narrow the gap to 5 and 11.  It seems to be an all-day game rather than an evening one.
(4) Is there a definition that separates HMGs and MMGs?  Re-rolling HMG dice require re-rolls of all the dice, including any '6's that are successes?
(5) Are there are any penalties for mixing different units within a box-square?  I have ended up with two platoons co-sharing a set of (four) grid-squares in the front line but there does not seem to be any command penalty for sharing the same spaces; are we missing something?

My Father served in North Africa and Italy; his 21st birthday party was rowing in a leaky boat from Kos to Turkey, evading the invading Germans.  At 21, my mother was on the top level of a bus at the station when a passing doodlebug finished its run and tipped down; it was heading directly for the bus and my mother resigned herself to dying when the eggcup of fuel that would have been thrown forward as the nose tipped down kicked the engine into life, raising the nose so it flew over the railway station and exploded on the far side of the station.

MiG Ammo do a washable white which is good on vehicles.  Worth practising though as the effect can overwhelm a model.  Otherwise I might suggest chipping fluid or just streaking with a white enamel paint.

Worth knowing.  However, in reality, is it that the troops just gave a quick broom application of whitewash or were the vehicles fully painted with white paint?  Hence streaky white wash of the vehicles or a full paint job?
