Western / Re: Old West Wagons and such

Thank you Radar for a useful response.  To the other master's of the obvious, maybe I'll wait another six months before bothering posting here.  No wonder the site is so little travelled.  Sorry, but it is very off putting.

There was a Mormon battalion in the Mexican American War, too.

And I have some Mormons in my Old West collection of civilians 2:1 women to men.  Though would nice to be have a Jean Seberg character from Paint Your Wagon: "Is that what you've been admiring, Mr. Rumson?"

Western / Battle of the Rosebud
March 12, 2020, 06:44:58 AM
I will focus my 1876 Plains War main battle on the Battle of the Rosebud as history and with some of its what-ifs over the Bighorn site.  Better balance of forces for the army and greater variety and quantity of native allies (that prevented what could have been the first of two annihilations).  Actually just ordered some additional figures for my infantry towards that goal, both on foot and mounted (not from Peter Pig though).

Big Horn is just too one sided despite it being the 'famous' battle.

The big challenge - including my Buffalo soldier cavalry!  I guess those will get reserved for the Apache Wars though the Buffalo soldiers did make late appearances in the Sioux wars.

As to actual buffalo?  120 painted and based, just need to texture the bases - and, yes, Peter Pig is well represented in the collection as is, I think, some of all the 15 mm buffalo available - adds variety.

Western / Re: Sound recognition

Last Stand Hill is a few miles from Reno Hill.  Those heard sounds were probably reported by those who advanced to Weir Point.

Walked a good portion of Little Big Horn/Greasy Grass battlefield a few years ago - the gully below Last Stand Hill still harbors the remains of quite a few of the Cavalrymen who lost their lives.

Lakota were the western most but there were also Dakota and Nakota.  And I thought Sioux meant 'enemy'.

Western / Old West Wagons and such
March 12, 2020, 06:35:35 AM
So, Peter Pig offers three options: supply wagon, settler wagon, and chuck wagon.  QRF has both a stage coach and a settler wagon.  And Minifig, again, has a settler wagon and a stage coach.  Those are the compatible options that I am aware of.  Yet there were scores of different kinds of wagons through out the old west.  Of course, Blue Moon greatly enhances the options, especially if you are willing to include the generic wagons from the Napoleon range.  But it the old west they have a buckboard - probably the most common wagon - and a doctor's buggy, again quite common, and I think more but the site is down as I type so can't double check.

Just curious why Peter Pig only has the three options.  Stage coach can easily be because of those other companies already having them already and, in my opinion, there's is the best settler's wagon.  And only they offer a chuck wagon.  Oh, and not to forget, they have nice destroyed wagon - which can be supplemented with a nice offering - in metal - from QRF.  I've said this here before - really love to see a fringed topped surrey style wagon.  Can modify the Russian WWI wagon for a brougham style wagon.

I don't expect anyone to offer scores of options but there are some glaring omissions with probably the most glaring being the mud wagon which existed in triple the quantity of the very heavy and quite expensive Concord coaches - the 'famous' stage coach of the movies.

Mind you, my insight is a bit different than most folks because I've laid in a total of 100 wheeled conveyances for my Old West/Plains Wars setup.  And that reminds me, number 100 was a tumbleweed wagon that will need some modification to provide game table durability since it is an MDF version meant for long, long ago that I will adapt to the old west with new and proper wheels (from Stone Mountain miniatures) and seated men inside the bars.  One only need watch Hang 'Em High to find a gaming use for tumbleweed wagon!

General discussion / Re: Why?

Confederate gray?  Gray was the color of uniform worn at West Point and most senior CSA generals hailed from West Point.  Though the militia argument above holds water, too.

Western / Re: Longhorns
February 26, 2020, 05:59:18 AM
14 of the 18 individually based cowboys - also primed for this setup - are also from Peter Pig as are the two chuck wagons ready for painting.  The four painted cowboys in the photo above are from the long gone Frontier Miniatures range as are the six painted longhorns in the image above - not sure where the other two painted cattle came from.  All of the painted cattle are likely to get reworked to look more like longhorns.  All 18 cowboys have 'matching' dismounts and there are also six dead cowpokes.  The six dead cattle, two longhorns and four cows are all from Peter Pig.  The dead longhorns are just the basic model with the stand carefully cut off and the head positioned to look as natural as possible for a dead cow.  I'd love a pack of skeletal dead longhorns and dead men and just longhorn skulls with horns, buffalo skulls, too - with vultures in a pack by themselves!  That would gladden my heart Martin - and open my wallet!  Hey, I also need dead sheep.  ;)

Take note that those painted cowboys are wielding lariats (ropes) - wish I could have found more like that!

As I've said before, my Old West figure collections is a bit large, like massive large.  That is not my only cattle herd - there are herefords, black baldies, and more primed and waiting paint.   Game goal: The Whole Wilder West, All At Once.

48 of those are Peter Pig with two more with the bases cut off to create dead longhorns.

Workbench and Suggestions / Re: New Item icon
October 18, 2019, 01:51:43 PM
Credible?  Um, humorous perhaps?

Visit every day?  Not likely.  Thus the reason for the request.  And how long is a new item up - when the yellow banner is populated?  If I haven't visited for a month will I still see what is new.  Of course, that may mean missing what I requested, of course, if I don't visit for that length of time.  While I've been visiting a lot lately it has been more because of joining this forum but it isn't a busy enough forum to necessarily sustain that rate of visitation, especially since it seems a significant portion of the forum focuses on Peter Pig rules and I haven't played any of those rules despite owning several sets.  Just not a thing locally.

Workbench and Suggestions / New Item icon
October 18, 2019, 03:05:58 AM
I know there is a NEW icon within any range that has new items added and that is great, love it.  But how about a home page icon that indicates something new within a range?  Not sure how much bother it would be but it might pay dividends.  I know I've found things useful to me in ranges I'm just not personally interested in.  Such an icon would clue me in to something I might not find for a very long time - if ever - since I'm not interested in that range but I'm always interested in something new.  Maybe off to the right of the bar for each range?

I've posted this concept at LAF but thought this thread needed a posting!

Two groups, one wearing white hats and another wearing black hats - shades of good guys versus bad guys, hey? - are both heading for the cemetery to bury one of their own.  Unfortunately, word has leaked out to both factions that due to a major screw up the funerals are scheduled for the same time on the same day and this is not going to work out well.  Except perhaps for the undertakers.  Lots of well armed men accompany the respective horse drawn hearses.  Maybe we can call it Bad Day at Boot Hill.  Perhaps event make it a 15 mil gamette (good excuse to sculpt that hearse!).

And, yes, Martin, this is an important - but not the sole - reason for requesting the addition of a horse drawn hearse to the Western range.  And why I need at least two (but, again, will buy at least four just to help make it a more viable item to sculpt).

Also, since you don't have a stagecoach in the range, maybe also add a Mud Wagon (since since a few other companies make 15 mm stagecoaches).  We need one for any English Bob arriving in Big Whiskey scenarios stolen from Unforgiven, I mean inspired - really I do.

Workbench and Suggestions / Re: ACW union generals
October 18, 2019, 02:34:41 AM
Looks like the October 15th date has come and gone but with the recent loss reported here on the forum that is more than understandable.  I take note that Martin lists five Union generals still to come but that there are seven numbers awaiting an item in the range.  Most curious, most curious indeed.

General discussion / Re: Electric in wargames
October 18, 2019, 02:29:08 AM
Since some have mentioned batteries (portable electric supply) I'll mention that I've used some "explosive illuminated puffs" to show a volcano in pre-eruptive state and I have dreams/hopes of doing something more elaborate some day - just need to create a way for delayed deposits of dry ice and then the great moment when the baking soda meets vinegar and red dye explosion (which has to be kept under some kind of control!).

The illumination for the buffs were the little flickering candles usually sold around the end of year holiday season.  Can't take credit for the buffs, another local modeler built them and gave me a cache.

Well, that it explains it then.   :o  Will have to pay more attention to dates in the future.  Still learning my way around this forum I guess.   ::)
