Reviewing my slightly smart-alec post, I realise I should emphasise that the Cass-Connett rules were viewed as a bit oddball (see Martin's list of typical comments received when developing CK) and left no heritage in rules writing.

Nothing should detract from the central role RFCM has played in creating modern gridded wargames over the last quarter-century.

I had better wind my neck in!

martin :)

I looked through the "Philosophy" and "Differences from other rules" sections - grids were not mentioned. Indeed, there are no grids at all. So it was either old age or Covid brain or both on my part, but I think you can rest assured that the original 1998 CK rules likely were indeed the first Ancients rules to feature grids!

Apologies for my confusion - you can now regain that moral high ground!

Well I wouldn't rush there.

Archie Cass published a set of Ancients gridded rules in 1965. I remember getting a copy with my Slingshot around that time.

As I recall, Archie constructed his table from a set of eight planks each divided into eight squares of painted terrain, which were then set out in random order.

The rules were simple and were largely superceded by Tony Bath's own rules sans-grid.

My PP package arrived yesterday with a stack of coloured dice and the BB rules.

I hadn't bought any PP rules since Pieces of Eight, quite a few years ago and am very impressed with this handsome volume.

I may do some initial testing with odds and sods to hand but a follow-up order for PP WOTR packs cannot be far off.
