Washington's Army / Re: American Dragoons
August 19, 2022, 11:23:30 AM
Thanks Martin, I'm planning to be at Newbury so I'll put in an order for collection there. I've already got the book and agree with you it is an excellent source for the period.

Washington's Army / American Dragoons

I want to use the PP American Dragoon heads to create a regiment, would I be better using the dragoon bodies or the 17th light dragoon bodies?

Gomi Designs does a nice 15mm hovercraft in their Vietnam Riverine range in the UK.

General discussion / Re: Hmm! Now which rules to use.

I  would also vote for By Fire and Sword rules, they are ideal for the ebb and flow of large cavalry battles, very important when your main army is the Tartar Crimean Khanate. I am also looking forward to their ECW rules which they were promising for this years Salute but have yet to appear. My most recent purchases were Martin's Scots ECW for which I am using BFAS basing and will use them both as mercenary regiments during the Deluge and as my first ECW army.

General discussion / Re: Best battle films

Flesh and Blood starring Rutger Hauer, the opening assault is gripping.

Knights of the Teutonic Order in Polish: Krzyżacy, has a great depiction of the battle of Grunwald (!410).

The Deluge, in Polish Potop, features the battle of Prostki (1656).

A vote for Ran but also one for Kagamusha.

General discussion / Re: when did you start?
November 30, 2020, 06:36:38 PM
I started in 1967 when I was 14. My mother told me that if I did not do something with all the Airfix and other plastic figurers I had other than line them up and knock them over again they would all be diopnated to charity. I bought the Shire book of wargaming, grabbed one of my school mates and fought my first battle within days. From then on I played fairly regularly during my school life, then as a member of the Manchester University Wargames Club, and then with the Whitehall Warlords  up to the present day.

General discussion / Re: Undercoat or not?

Norm,

I've never tried your "prime in black and then dry brush white" method, it sounds interesting and I think I may try it. My usual technique is almost the reverse with a white primer and then a black or dark brown wash to bring out the detail. My only recent innovation is that I have started using Halford's car primer for plastics with my plastic and resin figures.

What we need is a thicker mask through which ordinary speech cannot be heard,  fitted with a small microphone on the inside and a speaker on the outside. I could suggest this to the Government and wait for the tender invitation. I'm not sure if it could be fitted with a doughnut flap though.

PBI / Re: Destroyed vehicles

I have a couple of destroyed T55s for AK47 which do look very nice on the table, sadly Martin has never made the equivalent destroyed Centurion so they remain on the table with some cotton wool showing their brewed up status.

"No peace for the Government", taken from a Zapata quotation "If there is no justice for the people, there is no peace for the government".

General discussion / Culture Corner
September 10, 2020, 05:09:31 PM
I love Culture Corner, and this is no way a criticism of Hals and Turner but they have been up for quite a while now and I would  like to suggest a change. In keeping with the idea of paintings linked to wars and militery matters but not simply paintings of battles I would propose; the painting of Sultan Mehmed III from the Topkapi collection, "When did you last see your Father?" by William Frederick Yeames, or Guernica by Picasso.

(Prepares to be told his choice of art is rubbish.)

General discussion / Re: What are you working on....?
September 06, 2020, 04:26:45 PM
I am just finishing off some pirate houses and barracks which with white (ish) stucco walls and red tile rooves will do service from Mexico to Spain. I am thinking of doing a West Indies AWI campaign next year so who knows they may even be used for the Caribbean. I have also painted the figures from the Vietnam re-education set; the guard with the AK has joined the rest of my VC, the female figure has joined my modern rioters and the man with the board is now a sandwich board man with the ominous message "The End is Nigh" and is a bit of colour for my Zona Alfa game in 15mm.

When our club went on a cultural outing to the Normandy beaches we went over by ferry from Dover and started with the Calais museum which had some poor dioramas but some excellent uniforms and then visited some ten museums over a period of three days, including one museum specializing in items recovered from below the waterline. We based ourselves in Bayeau and a great time was had by all.

Regiment of Foote (ECW) / Re: Charles at Edgehill
September 04, 2020, 04:55:05 PM
My comment on this rule would be what is the use of the Gentlemen Pensioners? Surely including them with the King implies that they at least should be able to fight, perhaps the rule should be that if an enemy unit enters his square and defeats the Pensioners then the King is captured but if they are defeated the King has a chance to flee. He still loses the battle but lives to fight another day.

AK47 Republic / Re: Popular with the TMP readership!
August 29, 2020, 11:29:26 AM
AK 47 is a good set of rules so I am not surprised at seeing near the top, however I am surprised to see Skirmish Sangin getting so few votes, for one man/one figure games it is definitely my go to set.
