Battles in The Age of War / unit composition
July 01, 2025, 09:35:07 PM

back in the dim and distant past, I seem to recall that there was a limit of arquebus or bow per unit and it was something like "must have more spear than shooter bases".

Was I imagining this as I cannot find it in the rules?  The sample armies follow this to the letter ,  I am low on shooters for a few units and want to build a few options eg choice of bow or firearms.

Battles in The Age of War / opportunity fire

A quick yes/ no question about opp fire.

a unit moves into opp fire range at an angle, but defender's unit elects to not use opp fire as he is worried about a frontal attack, can only hit on a 6 and decides to reserve it.  He wishes to opp fire on a second unit if it closes to contact.  In the end, the second unit does not roll enough AP to close with his second unit to his front and halts deliberately outside opp fire range....

Can the defender now elect to take his opp fire against the first unit still within opp range and is his only valid target?

A discussion regarding interpretation revolved around what the interpretation of "going back" meant in the rules.

one side interpreted that "not going back" meant it couldn't fire as if anything that had happened to it in the meantime would be ignored...ie...It would have to fire as it currently existed with any extra casualties and disorder, not what it could have fired at the time.

The other side said it meant if you elected not to fire for any sreason, you couldn't change that decision.

Best regards

Quote from: lekw on May 09, 2025, 09:26:05 PMJust a few pictures of the Russian Civil War stuff from PEter Pig. I have the WW1 Russians on the paint desk and will put them up as soon as based and flocked.

https://thelostvoltigeur.blogspot.com/

I am just finishing off the last units of my russian reds.

They are actually the ww1 serbian cavalry figures I am using as an extraordinarily colourful unit. Hungarian hussars in bolshavik service. It was a choice I made because there were dismounted figures available. I never thought I would ever buy anything from that range, but Martin has excelled himself with them.  I think they are my current favourite PP figures.

So..if you need some red cavalry with dismouts that will stand out a mile....those are your guys!

I like the cut of your Jib!

"that man knows how to defend a hopeless position.....Raise him to Corporal!"

This is my biggest grumble about myself as a wargamer.....Distraction and shiny get preference over mundane and practical.

So...How stupidly impractical do you go?

eg

Should ALL your RCW armies have a separate armoured train of  generally 5 carriages?

if your justification for not doing the 5th RCW army with a train is it has been given a gunboat that is 380mm long, is that a good thing?

Should all your armies have their own specific arcraft right down to the historically used model version?

Is having a 1/100 Short Sunderland as a 15mm marker a bit OTT?

Any thoughts?

Hi Martin,

Derek would very much appreciate this.

One of his AK47 units were the "Easter Road Away Team" wearing Hibs shirts.

Just heads unfortunately,

The only uniform slightly alike for both the french and italians is the ww1 british for busses, but they are in 3's and i need singles.
If we had loose seated italians,, i could do various italians,  french motorised and even Norwegians

Anyone have any suggestions for base seated figures that could be used with headswaps for crewing transports for french motorised,  French dragooon portee and Italians?

Hi these look interesting. I have some navy bods in my RCW murmansk force and a couple of these would be interesting to add.

Russian, french and Italian passengers would be nice.  You can get russians elsewhere, but italian and french are about 3 figures in total available and they are all drivers!

Western / assault
August 05, 2018, 04:46:02 PM
Hi all,

There is a bonus in the fights for assualting which describes a term used for assault. (I havent got the rules to hand but it is like "close" or "near")

However, I can find no reference that defines what qualifies for that term in the rules.  Is it for starting in an adjacent square (Proximity) or on a  side square (opportunity)?
