I'm guessing there's not a lot of interest for this - I'd wondered if with the release of the FoW "cold war gone hot" there might be some for a far superior and much less awkward system?!

There might be a crowd, I think the Wyre Forest lads are there as well (or they say on the Pendraken forum!) ;)

I wonder if the bar is decent...

Splendid, say hello if you spot me!

Yes, I'd think a fairly small scale set that doesn't take masses of figures might drive some interest - not so good for figure sales per army, but drive a bit of volume?!

Basic Impetus & DBA are good examples, whilst going for a small time period with matched opponents would be excellent and let you get some flavour in. Pre-game set up would be great, so long as it's quick (ten mins, fifteen maybe?) and covered getting the terrain up on the board and wasn't the main event/takes too much focus, and involves both players or is quick/trustworthy enough it can be run thru by each side at the same time...

What period though? The PP Ancients range is a bit limited... I'd suggest Germans, Parthians, Imperial Romans but is that too close to Aurelian? Or "Chariots at Armageddon" and do a 15mm Syro-Caanite/Hittite range to mach the Egyptians ;)

Hi all, anyone else going?

I'll be there as part of Circle Battlegroup (running a Song of Blades & Heroes participation game, so join in if you fancy!) so pop up and say hi :)

To the Sound of the Guns....

My first ever set of rules for Napoleonics. What a tough set to start with, aimed at competition although I didn't know that at the time.

Christ, that set put me off Napoleonics for a decade!

Truly obtuse and faffy, and took ages to produce a non-result, which you then had to go through again and again and again the next time anyone did anything.

On the positive side, DBA was awesome - simple, achievable, playable and really felt like you were a general despite the tiny size. Lost all it's charm when blown up to DBM and it became all about the fiddling about with angles and tiny moves and not about the broad sweep of command.

Combined Arms & Command Decision - we played great games with that, well above it's scope really by the end. Divisional & Corps level clashes, air landings, opposed river crossings, and all. I still fondly remember the only counter to the speed, firepower and protection advantage given to the Abrams over Soviet kit - road march a Motor Rifle Battalion into their deployment zone so they had to wipe it out, then before they could seize all the good terrain and become invulnerable a Corps worth of artillery on each Abrams platoon in turn :D

I suspect you might want to follow Sam Mustafa's example with "Aurelian" - it covers a pretty darn narrow period for "conventional ancients wisdom" of one set for 4500 years of pointy stick and tin pants, just  the "Crisis of the Third Century", and is a campaign of nine battles and seventy years with your commander (you) advancing through the period.

That sort of focus really helps with the flavour and feel of RFCM sets. Perhaps a "Clash at Kadesh", or "Punic Punch Up" or "Devastation of the Diadochi" might be a go-er?

I thought the attachments had disappeared, but the Forum had logged me out somewhere along the way - you'll need to be logged in to see them!

Abteilung / Re: Abteilung

I played them half a dozen times with a mate, we both enjoyed them for "larger scale toys" - normally Spearhead in 6mm was my flavour of choice but Abteilung was a nice bit of game for a similar-ish level of command that was easier to get into and looked/felt much better with larger mini's. If they do come up on PDF I might well invest in a copy and see if I can float them at the club - Rapid Fire is their current flavour of the day, but it's not a set I like much!

Excellent :)

I like the "half track, Sherman, jeep, rifle, rifle, ATTACK CHOPPER!" jump in technology there :D

AK47 Republic / (Old) AK Across The Iron Curtain

I popped this onto the old group way back when we were all very into old AK, but just in time for no one to comment; it's a couple of flow charts and notes for using O-AK for "the big one" - Central Europe in a Cold War Gone Hot scenario.

Troop quality should be viewed within that context - what I've described as Militia is still mostly modern military, and likely as good as a 1960's Bush War Regular or Professional status etc. It also uses the last agreed upon amendments sheet that was a collaborative effort from us all - attack and scout choppers differentiated, ATGW's, heavy mortars and other bits and bobs. I've attached that file as well, but in no way was it my sole work :D

Text of the Notes below - I was thinking on fleshing them out properly for magazine submission but the urge waned and it's basically just notes and flow charts :)

Comments very welcome!

QuoteNotes on NATO/Warpac Flowcharts (or Ak across the Iron Curtain)

It is recommended that players use the off table artillery support rules from the supplement, as well as the revised rules amendments, points costs and new unit types in the attached amendments version 1.21n file.

Air & artillery strike special events on firing may be used by regular and professional troops.

Any air strike within range of an unpinned AA weapon has an additional –1 on the attackers dice.

With the fluid nature of modern combat, entry and set up points can be left as is (alternatively, designate three adjacent sides where the defender may come on at the centre point, and two or three adjacent corners for the attacker).

'Car bombs' simulate remote booby traps or remote guided weapons (and are found in the supplement).

For terrain, at least one major road, several built up areas of buildings as well as multiple small hills and woods and fields should be used. Rivers and streams should either be cosmetic or have a large number of bridges and/or fords available (or you can improvise some engineering rules if you want!).

Have fun!

I should probably have remembered the new forum existed and been thinking about them, then :D

Whoops.

Ok, I'll have a cogitate again!

Thank you for making original-AK available in PDF :)

I really need to find time to slot it into the club, although I suspect the chassis will be used for an AVBCW campaign, crackingly adaptable set of rules.

Speaking of which, is there interest if I try to remember what I bodged up for French-IndoChina on the previous forums?
