Title: Edition 4 of 15 Mil?
Post by: FifteensAway on October 04, 2019, 05:46:51 AM
Delayed.  In need of some friendly attention?

Are you trying to send me into a mild case of delirium tremens by not publishing?

 :(

Glad folk are looking forward to it. Yes there is a delay but PPHQ is on it  (?)   Mostly Stewart's, Simon's and Dave's fault (see what I did there, blame everyone else, clever :-[).  I have not met Stormy Daniels either.

I've just realised - having thought myself innocent - the heinous crime I've committed. So Martin is indeed right - sorry all.

I see that the page for Edition 4 is now up on the PP wewebsite, but the link provided there is to Edition 3.

Is Martin teasing us....?

Finger trouble? I have ordered the gamette figures for my board and will have them with me at the games weekend and the PBI day.

Title: Edition 4
Post by: martin goddard on October 28, 2019, 04:45:39 PM
Matias is working on edition 4.
He is going to "buff it up" a bit.

I think the MILL project is moving along well.
In 2020 we will see if the amount of articles can be maintained.

The gamettes so far have been popular I think.
The ability to have no limit on pages has allowed lots of big pictures to be posted.

The next gamette will probably be "Limber 1863"
Title: Re: Edition 4
Post by: Leman on October 29, 2019, 07:45:40 AM
I like the sound of that next gamette. For the future perhaps a WOR gamette, Rescue the King or Escape with Queen - thinking of a number of incidents in the period such as First  and Second St.Albans, Bosworth, Queen Margaret’s flight to Wales with the prince, and after the Battle of Tewksbury.

Is there room for late entries for issue 4 or shall I hold over for requests for issue 5? Only a shortish piece with some Vietnam campaign ideas.

Best if you send it to me for edition 5. It will sit there "idle" for months, but nice when it comes out Sean :)

Well, Issue 4 appears to be tantalisingly close, now the section for it is up on the PP website. Is the link to the magazine supposed to be live yet, Martin (it still links to Issue 3) or is this just to tease us a little more?
Title: Re: Edition 4 of 15 Mil?
Post by: John Watson on November 11, 2019, 05:23:02 PM
Is it just me? I now have a link for Edition 4 but it appears that Edition 4 is incomplete. Although the contents page is there a lot of the page numbers are XX. Also only the first half of the articles have populated, which means that Stewart's trench raid (amongst other things) is missing.

Judging by how much time took to down load there may be a problem with the download timing out!
The size may be a problem.

Fear not

Matias is working on it.
I have put up his work thus far.
Once it is completed I can put it all up.
I put the first bit up to re-assure people that it is not "dead".

Hi Leman,
you have done more than I have, which is nothing.  I do have a couple of ideas in mind which may come to fruition now I have finished renovating the the utility (2 new cupboards made from scratch, new larder cupboard, new matching doors on existing cupboards, and new matching plinths and incidental repairs) although my wife is talking about dolng the kitchen next year. :)

Martin sent it to Matias (who's really Ivan), who returned it to Martin, who thought he was still waiting for it from Ivan (or possibly Matias), who pointed out to Martin that he'd already sent it, so Martin's looking for an email from Ivan Matias, or Matias Ivan, to post the latest version to the PP website.

Come on Sean, please keep up in the back row there!

Ivan,
First impressions are - it looks really great, but I found the whole DropBox thing something of a faff. Was this necessary due to the file size, as opposed to the PDF being hosted directly on the PP website?
Apologies if this comes across as being negative - I'm simply trying to understand the rationale.

I cannot get the pdf. It is not available.  It is a linked google drive file or something too tricky to get a "handle" on.  All a bit beyond me I am afraid to say.  It does look great though. Well done and thanks to Matias.

No idea about that. I just used DropBox to share the file with Martin, it was his choice to use the DropBox link. You can download it from DropBox right?

I can now (i.e. since posting my earlier moan - sorry!).

I didn't want to have to create a DropBox account and suchlike, but I have now realised that I can click on the white "down arrow" button next to the blue Sign In one at the top right of my screen, and download the PDF directly from there, thanks.

A real pain, first you go to Dropbox, whats this for, then it asks you to register, but if you kill this window it will open. It take while as it is so large and 75 pages.
You can use the table of contents on the first page, but is not interactive. This is worse than a *.PDF or even a word version.
And then when I scroll through to hunt for an article I get error messages saying that "pages have not loaded".
Only loaded to page 21.

This does not sell 15mm very well.
If I wish to save it to the computer all I can do is as a web page. This includes Dropbox side bar taking more than a quarter of the screen view.

I also don't wish to create a 'drop whats it"!

This afternoon I went on the PP site, clicked the orange mil banner went down to issue 4 , clicked and issue 4 came up as pdf, great picture, great articles.
Just tried again and it’s all Dropbox now and can’t acces it, what a waste.

I don't know how it works chaps , sorry.
I cannot get it as a pdf.
It cannot be downloaded as a pdf to my system. We did try.
It is a google hub file I think, not  a normal pdf.
I can only get the dropbox link.
Leave it with me and I will see what can be done.
There must be a solution. :-[

I don't know why there is a problem.
To download you click where the arrow with the 1 is pointing and then click where the arrow with the 2 is pointing.
If you can't see the bar, click where the arrow with the 3 is pointing. That should give you a PDF file that can be uploaded directly to the website.

Thanks for spelling this out, Ivan - this is precisely what I had eventually managed to do.

However, I am wondering whether the view may be device or operating system specific - maybe different for phones and iPads in particular?
Title: Re: Edition 4 of 15 Mil?
Post by: martin goddard on November 17, 2019, 09:26:44 AM
I tried that .
It does not give a file that can be saved as a straight .pdf.  It wants to save as a "webpage complete"  or "webpage. HTML only"?
Usually I make a word file, convert it to a pdf file. Then I  upload it to the website and all is well.
This is turning into  real headache.

Title: Re: Edition 4 of 15 Mil?
Post by: Colonel Kilgore on November 17, 2019, 10:04:15 AM
Rittervonbeck - it's a pretty big file (46 MB), so probably not great to save here if we can avoid it, to try to limit unnecessary hosting costs.

But you've stung me into action (thanks!) - I've downloaded the PDF, and will transfer to Martin by another method, which we've used successfully before.

Fingers crossed!

@Martin - I've used WeTransfer to send the PDF of The Mill to your peterpig email address.

It should be available for 7 days: we shouldn't need all that time!

Do please email me if you have any problems,

Well worth waiting for.

I regret to say that at the time, the attractions of Peter Laing 15mm were lost on me but I enjoyed seeing the collection painted up in the 'glossy toy soldier' style I now find very attractive and usually associated with 42mm and larger.

The photos of Peirre's were equally appealing though in a different way - quality painting.

And complemented by an ecellent article on painting by 'Another Simon' (the title on my article may be wrong but I can rejoice in the title of 'Brian'  ;)  I found myself in agreement with much that Simon had to say, particularly regarding brushes, Series 7 are well worth the price (and Cass Art have an online sale till Monday evening with 20% off).  I'm certainly prompted to add a piece for next issue with how my own approach and experience with washes and contrast paints.

I also enjoyed the piece from Elliot about the Suare Bashing day - wish I could have got along though I'd have been short of an army.  My Russian Civil War armies were in (cough) 6mm but went astray and when on loan to a friend who moved house.  I'm tempted to replace them with 15mm forces though you get an awful lot of figures to paint with all the reservist infantry.

Elliot - I see you game in Central London - like you I'n new to the (revised) Square Bashing and live in South London.  If you're interested in another opponent let me know, I could raise a scratch force from various figures I painted for my own Ruritannian Civil War setting of Bayonet & Ideology.  I play to enjoy the game, not bothered whether I win or lose as long as I have a good time.

My thanks to all for another enjoyable issue and good to see the venture continuing its strong start.

Brian

Thank you for the feedback, Brian - it's nice to know that folk read the content of The Mill as well as looking at the pretty pictures!

Further praise, comments, critique would, I am sure, be welcome from others - if only to prove that you too have read it :) - to help improve the content and keep this project vibrant.

Thanks for the offer of a 'loaner' but the comrades of the Reathamgrad (formerly St Reatham) soviet are working hard throughout the long winter nights, producing armaments for a new army, barely stopping to consume their meagre rations of Borsch and vodka.  This is arduous work, so great are the numbers who have rallied to defend the Revolution (all those reservist battalions but this should be an entertaining army).  I’m also building up a set of scenery and can field an interventionist (Archangel) army from a ragbag of WWI figures so I can play solo to get to grips with the system.  If there’s anyone interested in SB in the South London area, please get in touch.  I’m more interested in enjoyable games with good company and the right historical feel than winning (just as well with my track record).  A few photos of progres so far (apologies for the quality of the photos, it's a skill whichhas always eluded me)

Thanks.  The slightly fuzzy photo probably shows them at their best!  They're just block painting with a AP wash which is simple and quick and suits my arthritic fingers.  I should be able to set up and play a game solo next week - really looking forward to doing so.
Title: Re: Edition 4 of 15 Mil?
Post by: Leman on January 08, 2020, 02:12:33 PM
But the thing is, the more difficult and time consuming it  takes to paint figures then the longer it takes to put armies together and the less playing time there is. I fully support the block paint, wash, bit of highlight ready-to-go approach.
Title: Re: Edition 4 of 15 Mil?
Post by: Brian Cameron on January 09, 2020, 01:19:31 PM
Thoroughly agree.  There just over 200 figures for the army.  In 28mm that would have taken me months doing the full 'Kevin Dallimore' job, which I enjoy, but it means it's a long time before you can put an army on the table with the possibility of your enthusiasm waning.  By comparison, having bough the figures mid-December, the army is now done, though I'm painting up a few more to provide more than one option for the army composition, and I'm now stuck (almost literally)into making the scenery templates, painting buildings etc.
