Title: Interesting you tube videos
Post by: martin goddard on November 08, 2017, 02:50:29 PM
Any interesting you tube videos. Not just complete  films but all sorts (scenes of films etc)?

Here is a good cavalry music video.

Perhaps there's a better place, but I've recently discovered a German group playing PBI. Here's a video of theirs:

Their Peter Pig Russians and Germans fight it out over their excellent Red October factory is excellent. Here's the site:

Batko,

they are excellent videos! Although I did see someone using a tape measure  ;D

I wonder how popular WW2 wargaming is in Germany? I know they have a very strong community playing games like Warmachine and 40K, but don't know about WW2. Not one swastika on any of the panzers unlike many models belonging to people from other countries you'll see, especially those who play Flames of War.

Well the AWI is very popular here, and we lost that one. How many gamers have a Banastre Tarleton in their games? I am always surprised at those gamers who happily amass SS Divisions but absolutely refuse to play Confederates in an ACW game.

I know people will distinguish between the Heer and AS troops as a morale compass of acceptability. For the record I have no judgement to make. I'm a grown up and understand death and destruction represented by you soldiers has little to say about my own values.

The Vietnam War saw US troops massacre civilians. I'll happily play Vietnam. Both sides in the Spanish Civil War killed civilians. I play SCW.

But Germans are very aware of how the outside world views them and any form of militairism is seen as odd. I have several German friends whom we visit on a regular basis. The war is not off limits for discussion but they wonder why there remains a fascination with the period. They accept the holocaust but separate that from discussion of the war. A German soldier at Normandy had little influence over events in the death camps.

I don't have many hang ups over armies that I play, but I cannot help but feel a bad feeling about playing AWI. I know it is irrational but I cannot seem to get over the feeling that to play it would be unpatriotic. I think it is because the Americans make such a big fuss over celebrating it. It feels shit like rubbing ones face in it, especially as we are supposed to be such close allies.
Title: Re: Interesting you tube videos

I'm sure you did, Sean. They play a few other games besides PBI, and I think there was even some 1/72 scale figures running about on the same tables as their 15mm stuff, (though not at the same time I hope). There's a snapshot with the earlier version of PBI there somewhere too.

As for Germans playing ww2 games, a lot of the geeks playing tabletop still seem abundant, though I imagine a lot shy away from putting Swastikas on their toys, definitely.

OK, I gave up with Android and went back to my PC. Here is an interesting video or two for you. What do you think? You can look at the rest of the ones I have on my channel as well if you like.

Yes, thank you. I used to paint a lot of W40K stuff as I really liked painting and converting all those sci-fi tanks and vehicles. Not too much in the way of conversion needed on historical tanks, after all you cannot get away with sticking a plasma cannon on your Tiger or Challenger!☺

However despite having loads of W40K armies all nicely painted i have never played the game or had any inclination to do so, mainly I think brought about by the way they harass and hound you whenever you try to go into one of their shops or you phone them up. I have been chased out of more than one GW store without making a purchase by an over enthusiastic staff member who refused to let me look quietly in my own space and time. I did have a go at Rogue trader when first released back in the 1980's but only a couple of games and have not touched it since.

Still I do enjoy a good tank!

Most of the videos were made just with a simple digital camera sat on the table or floor and put together frame by frame using Windows Movie Maker. Much easier to do from Windows XP than with Windows 10 I found.

Duncan,

I think you will find the modern GW shops are much friendlier places and far less harassing. They have had a change of leadership recently and now actively engage in social media and have their own Twitch TV channel which can be quite entertaining. The most you will get on going into a shop these days is a friendly hello. I am fairly sure they have been told to refrain from chasing you around the store asking what army you collect and trying to sell you the latest cool toy.

I have played Warhammer Fantasy and Age of Sigmar plus a little 40k, mainly because my club play a lot of it and if I want to get any sort of game in I have yo join in! They are quite fun games if you don't take any of it too seriously. The stories are very entertaining.

I collected a large Chadian Force and  Chaos marines army. My son and I used to play many years ago.

Most of mine were Imperial Guard, but I also had a large Space marine and Sister's of battle. I did a big Ork army with loads of conversions and posted about it ASCI went on the Warseer Forum a few years back.
I did also do Chaos Marines as Chaos Ultramarines which was quite fun!
I have not done anything GW for years now though.

Alternatively type in her name Conny Sargent

My wife Conny has just started a new YouTube project where she wants to talk to you and about things in her life. She has so far done three short videos. An introduction, interview with me and an interview with a very unhappy Corky.
We are learning as we go andcsome FREE video editing software that is easy to understand would be good. I used to use Windows movie maker under XP but the latest version of this seems to have been complicated to the point of making it unusable to every day non tech people.

Anyway I know she would appreciate the views and subscriptions and positive criticism. (No trolling please or she will be put off!)

Corky would probably like to know he is loved as well although he has been slot happier since. Perhaps nerves along with all the others things that he was upset about on that day!

Anyway, she is looking for people to talknto about wargaming and life in general, you never know, you !at be a target!

Strange format for the camera Duncan with most monitors in the horizontal format.
Title: Re: Interesting you tube videos
Post by: Duncan on May 15, 2018, 06:35:30 PM
Thank you for your feedback. I think it is just the way that Conny holds her tablet, like she is reading a book rather than landscape like I do. We have discussed this now and I have explained that it would look better viewed in landscape for most monitors unless there is a specific reason for having it portrait. So wecwill see next time. Unless she forgets that is anecdotes do I?

My first observation is that Connie has the pace "just right". Too many people (myself included) gabble on too fast. The listener needs time to interpret what is being said. If you have a friend with an apple laptop you can use iMovie, which is very easy to use indeed. The Apple movie program is marvellous!

It was a good video (although Conny really needs to change the video orientation) but after hearing the many horrifying news reports coming out of the UK recently I would never willingly allow my woman to walk about alone and unprotected.

What reports are those?

I would like to walk with her as I used to do a lot of exercise, walking, swimming and cycling, but now I am a cripple and due to a hip problem anything more than a few meters and I am in agony and have to sit down.

Besides, she doesn't listen to what I say! I am just a cripple!

The gang related stabbings and shootings in London. The last I heard they were spreading throughout the country.

Conny's video is better than the official PP videos. I have never been to a Wargames convention so I found it very interesting. Who was the camera shy guy by the PP stall? I expect it is someone who posts here because he knew Conny. Why don't the PP crew make some promotional videos of their wares? I liked the look of those vehicles Conny filmed and would definitely buy some of  them if they were in my current Wargaming period. Likewise with the rules. All you need is someone who is not camera shy to do a quick talk-through of each the rule sets and I am sure you would begin selling more of them.

I am not on YouTube so I can't leave a thumbs up for Conny. However, please tell her I was impressed by the video and wish it had been longer.

I will pass on your praise to her. She has been trying to  do more interviews but a lot of people are camera  shy it seems and do not want to appear (not just with the hobby but in all aspects of life. Still she is enjoying it I think.

This year seems to the year I learn about WW2. It has always been a fringe period of interest for me but for some reason I've found a real interest in it more than ever before.

This video is excellent discussing various tanks throughout the war. The Elefant video is very interesting.

One query for you tank experts though. The King Tiger could take out any Allied tank at a range of 3Km, or 2 miles. I imagine line of sight over this range was rare. I take it there was no such thing as 'in-direct fire' from tanks. In North West Europe especially I can't imagine intervening obstacles and the lie of the land would preclude visibility of this sort of range.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Also the King Tiger took 300,000 man hours to make. Incredible.

If you read Otto Von Carius' (tank ace and pharmacist) accounts of serving using Jagd tigers, you can see what a disappointment they were. His problem as a unit commander was the inexperience of the crews and poor reliability of the tank.
By the time the tanks were ready the vast open plains of eastern Europe were not the battleground anymore.
