Title: What makes a game interesting to me
Post by: martin goddard on September 05, 2025, 12:55:17 PM
Can you name two things that encourage you to walk over to game at a show and have a look.

For me it would be an unusual period/scale/scnery and/or folk there to chat about their game.
I will have a really good look at beautiful games but would not tarry long at them on the assumption (maybe wrong) that the "look" is more prominent than the rules ideas  used.

Two things - the game looks impressive in a period I am interested in (so unlikely to go and look at robots chasing wizards) and the players look like they would be willing to talk to passers-by (seen too many show games where all you see is a sea of bent backs and after about 5 minutes you have still not seen a face that looks interested in speaking to the public).

For me it's the look and/or novelty of the game.

I'm not usually too bothered whether people want to speak to me or not.

Although I am grateful for Andy speaking to me about a game he was putting on (while still residing in the UK), as that's how we met in the real world  :)

That was at Colours as well. I think the thing I most miss about the UK is the club overnight trips to places like Newbury, Reading and Abingdon. Might make a point of going down to Antwerpen for this year's Crisis. That will depend on my son's schedule at that time as he is currently training to become a Dutch train driver.

1. Any game that isn't 18' long with 5,000 28mm figures that looks like it's something I could never recreate at home.

2. An unusual period always interests me. Nathan, the Toxic Pixie (remember him from the old Yahoo Group days) presented a French-Indo China game in 10mm. It was on a smallish table with simple terrain that looked great and really struck me as a great example of what a game can be. It must have been 10 years ago, but I still think of that game.

Anything that's different in which I'm vaguely interested.

Standouts for me are:

Years ago in Newcastle at a Tyneside Ancients show seeing Romans v Numidians in a desert setting and and ancient Egyptian army made from Atlantic plastics.

The original Charles Grant Spencer Smiths refighting Mollwitz at a Partizan.

Most recently Simon Miller putting on a Glorantha / Runequest TTS game set in Prax.

In the days when I was regularly going to shows, I tended to have a quick look at every table then gravitate to anything which invited participants. Some of the demo games were interesting (and very well presented), but the players often seemed to get wrapped up in rules minutiae and it became a little like watching paint dry.

On the other hand, some participative games were also a bit lacking in interest. I remember one occasion when I spent two or three hours waiting for something to wander into range of my lonely Pak 36... on that occasion the game really did feel like the "real thing".

I looked at the colours games today.
They looked very nice.
There were a couple of participation games that looked great fun.
Good job by the Reading  club.

There is a problem with games packing up at 3 o clock or earlier. Very poor behaviour.

That has always annoyed me as well. Sometimes even traders did that.
