Title: AK47 People version - Intervention and arab forces
Post by: mellis1644 on August 15, 2025, 04:55:45 PM
Hi,

Quick question after starting to look through the new version of the rules.

Is there a reason the previous version lists for Middle Eastern forces and the western/communist intervention forces do not have force lists? In theory they should be easy to create so just wondered...

Would these type forces not work with the new version or were they not included for other reasons (current world events etc.) ?

Thanks

No real reason Mark
I felt the rules needed to be very streamlined so that players were not intimidated by information.
The 12 armies listed should encapsulate most  armies. The rules would not handle high quality armies though

OK thanks for the answer.

I understand the lack of granularity for high quality armies but allowing modeling of such allows for interesting scenario's, and maybe even using the rules for conflicts in the middle east.

Note, it looks like the Intervention forces and even the arab ones from the last version should map quite closely to how the Mercenary core list was done. With a few tweaks for flavour it should be ok to create similar forces to add such forces. Maybe a good 15mm mag article to add these might be an idea.

Is this an offer to write such an article??? 😃

I'd understood that it was a clear offer, gratefully accepted, with space reserved for said article in the next issue already :)

I actually think the slight opposite that these army lists and how they are made up allows for so good small Armies to be made up ?
South African, Israeli, Arab and a force I ve wanting to do for a while a British "Berlin" force ?
The way I see it, it only ever a snap shot or "QRF type" of a potential force, it's never going to be the "Full Army" of said force.
Having 2 tanks, 2 Armoured cars or 2 APC based weapons systems?( either with Tank guns or MGs?) 3 platoons with some support weapons and maybe transport.
Including a potential to swap the wheeled transport for Helicopters ? Very vulnerable ones ? As they would work similar to normal transport, but again maybe that's an idea that can be reviewed via a Magazine article?
I ve got some small metal Chinooks that would potentially be the trucks ?
A famous (small)battle in Serra Leon with the British (main established army) coming by Helicopters and "Boats"? To attack (the less well backed army) the Guerrillas main base camp if I remember rightly ?
Get dropped in ? Attack and get out as fast as possible ?
But anyway.
It's just working out "What" Army types these forces would fit into ?
This is definitely a game of "small armies" fighting rather than larger more well equipped armies ? From a more well established Army point of view a QRF or Ad Hoc type of force rather which was made up to fill the gap rather than fully Go To All Out War !
Martin has definitely made this so it's up to us how we define what country/Area the chosen army/force will represent rather than us been told this is an Sudanesse army or this is a Congo or Rhodesian force ?
Which with the world situation (s) as they are at is a good thing !

I do fancy trying these type forces but need to get playing the new version and finish painting up my forces to do that. I'm not one to come up with forces without playing the game beforehand and getting an idea of the system.

But yes I was thinking of things like the Congo, Somalia type US forces 'peace making/keeping' or even Soviet Afghan war. Theses (other than the last one) are not traditional super big investment engagements by the external big powers. Even the Soviet Afghan conflict soon got bogged down into smaller actions with decent sized (not skirmish) forces but without the full power of the Soviet armed forces able to just win.
