Title: Phew it is hot!
Post by: martin goddard on August 08, 2025, 05:31:53 PM
It is going to be jolly hot in the UK next week. Mid august.
Will this change your wargaming plans?

I thought I might do less painting in case it dries too quickly.
I might spend some time standing about in the garden to enjoy it.

Aside from the painting - if it's really hot you have to use a wet palette - no good if you use washes! Probably find something else, modelling or cleaning up to do.

Aside from that, probably not much as being a wage slave still (only a few more years before escaping), my hobby time is limited to weekends......along with everything else!

Gardens - too much about that will trigger hayfever!

Apparently we are in for the same next week (31C being touted as the top temp). No painting for me, and probably no playing either. Time to get out and about for some cycling or city visiting - Leeuwarden is next on my list. I have a voucher for the Fries Museum, so I can find out a bit more about Friesland. They have their own language, which is supposed to be the closest to Anglo-Saxon, so no longer mutually intelligible. Leeuwarden also has a great outdoor pub and dining scene, and a tower that leans more than Pisa.

Frisians are historically an interesting bunch, quite 'independent minded', from the little I've read. Should be a worthwhile trip 👍🏼.
(I took early Anglo-Saxons masquerading as Frisians to a DBA tournament once, in which you played five games with random other players' armies and then a single game with your own at the end.,,great fun. I took the Frisians expecting them to be in the running for 'Worst Performing Army', not so hot in DBx, but they excelled, and got the Best Performing Army accolade. I was mystified, but happy...)

You have to love the Dutch - so many letter combinations that look like English, but different pronunciation. Fries, pronounced Freess, not freeze - hiss that S.
