As with Ak using Zebras, also Mexico using long steer cattle which could also be used for Westerns.
What is the best number of animals on each base ?
How many bases with each number ?
Miles
A 1 and a 2 then as many fours as you need will enble any countdown.

I have done mine as 5 per base in order to keep the number of bases as low as possible. You could do 36 singles if that is easier on the maths.
Derek'd 4s should work.
The important consideration is that the most numerous base type needs to be the same.
ie. keep to all fours, fives, sixes etc.
This helps players more easily recognise what the countdown is at.
The system should work nicely for all countdown games

Some 5s, maybe a 3, a 2 and 1 ?
Just looking for some suggestions as 36 individuals bases would be too much?
I was going to fill up the the other bases, with other animals to keep the Animal feel ?
Example 3 Zebras, an Antelope, and cattle to make up 5 ?
Miles
Basically, have what you want. The easiest way to check needs for numbers per base is to do a "count upwards". Can you do 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. as each may appear in the count down? Hence my 1, 2 then 4s.

Obviously this is not a vital topic.
Just chat for fun.
I think that animals should not be mixed. This is for the sake of realism.
As I said above, this is not a major issue for anyone (I hope?). If you mix lions in with your Zebras the countdown might decrease of its own accord? A new mechanism?
martin :)
If you use rabbits you'll be all day counting...
Best not to mix breeds... though Sheep and Goats are referred to as Shoats by archaeologists because the bones are practically identical. Personally I'd prefer goats... no one makes the Middle Eastern variety with the droopy ears though (Nubians) :(
