Title: Square Bashing in Yorkshire.
Post by: Ilkley Old School on July 24, 2025, 10:50:13 AM
We popped over to Grahams for a game of SB. He uses 1/72 figures predominantly plastic with a few metals ones.

He set up the Amiens scenario with Nigel and myself playing the Brits and James the Germans.

The Germans deployed behind hasty defences await the onslaught.

(https://i.postimg.cc/HcygQF0N/20250723-195754.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/HcygQF0N)

The British called in a Gas Barrage but the communications were down. So they went forward anyway.

(https://i.postimg.cc/87xDj1Mv/20250723-204317.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/87xDj1Mv)

The British managed to get a point effect Barrage to arrive but it drifted causing little damage.

(https://i.postimg.cc/DWhjCHKD/20250723-204331.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/DWhjCHKD)

The British advance was supported by tanks and the German line came under pressure all along the front.

The British attacks captures 3 of the 4 as the German lines are overrun. A German counter attack fails and the British win the game.

The rules played well and we only had to refer to the rulebook on a couple of occasions. One question we had was regarding what happens if a unit takes more casualties than bases left. In the game I placed 3 hits on a German MG all of which failed the saving throw. Is this counted as 2 casualties on the square, as this is all the MG could take, or 3. We played 2.

Next week we are having a go at a 1914 game using my 28mm German and British figures.

Mark

HelloMark

Lovely.
These pictures  really inform us of the game.  Thank you.

Casualties
There can be no more casualties than bases.
e.g 3 hits on a half base MG unit. Maximum casualty bases is 1.

If hits are saved there are no casualties.
This might mean that an MG unit can withstand many hits, whilst a reservist foot unit suffers many casualty markers.  This is deliberate and intentional. Good quality units last longer than bad quality ones.
Good saves prevents casualties. This includes saving all hits.

This is covered in the FAQ here (https://rulesforcommonman.uk/index.php?topic=392.0)

While Martin says it's by design , I don't really like it , as it leads to 1/2 bases being useful in the square to absorb the hits, but reducing the final casualties

Mark,

A lovely looking game indeed!

You say you placed 3 hits on the MG, all of which it failed.

As a matter of interest, were there any other units in that same square which could / should have had hits applied to them?

HI Simon

Yes there was an Infantry unit. I threw well and got 7 hits so the Infantry got 4 hits.

Our second game of SB is set in 1914. The Germans are attacking a thin line of British and single French battalion.  Due to poor events the British start the game with 5 units in reserve.

A British MG ready to defend the Pimple - an  objective. Figures are Renegade and are now OOP.

Although interrogation of a captured prisoner confirmed that the Germans attack was in force the British command decides to push forward on their right.

The Germans have a single professional unit of Jagers to lead the advance.

A well aimed British Supression Barrage delays the German advance and allows the British advance on the right to push the Germans back in disarray.

Meanwhile the Germans advance on the British left and overwhelm the British deployed behind some hasty defences.

British reinforcements arrive to try and stem the German advance.

The Germans attack the Pimple under a well aimed British Point Effect Barrage. The attack us beaten off - just.

At this point we concluded the action which will be continued next week.

We finished our game with the BEF showing their plucky spirit by holding all 4 objectives.

My thoughts are now turning around to rebasing my 28mm collection from singly based to group bases.

I am thinking of 3 options.

Option 1. 3 figures on a 50 by 30mm bases. I would probably use 3 bases per unit and treat these as an 8 figure unit.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi22h1JScXOUUU8lDgfz6rFz_KIlZnW3GQvL51H88inEBL7u0QLcuj2EzwndhGDCFJ8NxjQB3pZYryaEr3mbKJvourXqUdJDikybyCO_8htIni2YRRmedGpC2owKmOaxj_TGJGR61QsTOThTnc7vB30d_cQd7ODcjSpKRtmZPirtPKGQgbJId8nqLMpS2-9/s3206/1000003995.jpg)

Option 2. 2 figures per base  on a 40 by 30mm base.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMOPt6XR-E0k1fBvxwzX3gG9M33WrMOhMFoh99IWyfMBnFqLC2b3-c1HFQeuTgFg3A8Eqdf88tpm19EpjFxBPap2hEC7XBZXnTk7Ilbsxpq5EZhUi_70La5CBYTxbm1-6wOgpsbMdqcEDmpd83DNhycWNwJXd18qjBde5TJLJ4c__OxR1EV8JSNxgPdc3Z/s2884/1000003996.jpg)

Option 3. 2 figures on a 30mm round base.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSoJfoZVEmK5DjsW0jH04gIF1_UPuR5dAVOHYHHlZ2bMeq3TFo0RqfGSn1j5A9mB3IZakLPSbEwnSbzW0i7XBoZ7HCanp0l4JWEIQe1-FU8UOjGKCPQQzvoi045hxWlXzflexMJL8ZVL25g42Y3SIgzpdxqQN65OodkWtKaFu4gVmA8HYupv2XBpyPEuSk/s2380/1000003997.jpg)

Is there anyone else using 28mm figures and if so how have you based them?

The figures shown are from the old HLBS range.

Mark

I have been getting some 10mm figures ready for 1914 SB on the Eastern Front. I should have enough done for a game.

I am using one base per unit and will use roster sheets for casualties and use a 4 or 5" square.

The Austrians.

They look really good. SB is very much my favourite set of RFCM rules with which I have now had games set in the FPW, Western Front 1914, The Caucasus 1915, Russia 1920 and Poland 1920. Currently toying with the idea of a Bavaria v Prussia 1866 game using a variant of SB.
