Title: Discord
Post by: martin goddard on July 16, 2025, 09:03:52 AM
Entoyment is starting to use DISCORD in order to arrange games.

I can see this might be of use in order to  advertise battle days and find opponents interested in historical gaming. that woudl be my only intest in using this program.
My concern is that it might be a repository for poor/childish male language and behaviour. That is one reason why I avoid social media (unless I am looking for medical/legal or political advice).

Have you used discord. What has been your feeling of it?

I use Discord for the Bedroom Battlefields community, started by a Scots podcaster with a very 'listenable' podcast which I enjoy. The Discord group is very much 'positivity only', and was chosen as a method to communicate WITHOUT the nastiness sometimes seen on social media 'proper'.
I can only say good things about this, martin, from my limited knowledge of Discord.

Thanks Martin.
This discussion might be of use to other members of the group.
I believe the Southampton group use whats app for a similar purpose.
Is Discord a phone app or desktop program?
Can peolpe be silenced?

Tried it for a while for my board gaming activities, but found it a nuisance to use and a bit intrusive with the notifications. So I dropped out of it.

You can access Discord via phone or desktop. All of my dealings are via desktop by choice.

You can, as with many social media platforms, block and/or mute individuals or groups. It's just about becoming familiar with the settings.

I tried using it once. It was a confusing jumble so I discontinued.

My only experience of it was during Covid, thru The Bournemouth Berserkers role playing group use of it. Very successfully I hear but like John says until you get in and silence a lot of the notifications it can be intrusive!
But I think this is a "social media" thing its possibly the AI trying to gain the site more likes and interest?
WhatsApp is a Message system that a lot of us use, to communicate with each other.
Very good for people that have different timescales in their days timetables. Like myself and Simon P. You can set up group talks as well as individuals, people only reply once they are able to ? The great thing about WhatsApp is the end to end integrity, no one but the intended recipient can read the messages, this is why "governments" don't like it ? It's very difficult to listen in too ?
It is a very convenient way of talking to others over a day, without distruping the other persons life, I find.

Luckily I am not too worried about the government listening in to my wargaming thoughts.
Thanks for all the background information given here too.
I might try the DISCORD for a week or two.

I have to admit that Whatsapp is the only one I have been able to handle successfully, because it actually does what it says on the tin. Stuff like Reddit, Twitter and Discord seem to be full of simpletons who think the world revolves around them, and everyone else is just make believe. Pretty much the Matrix generation.

I'd vote for WhatsApp. It is simple and you can control who has access to it. I use it for family, friends and for the various gaming groups I'm in.

I would go with whatsApp as well. I do have discord for some online gaming and it gets pretty confusing. Not a fan of it TBH.

The problem is that Entoyment are launching a DISCORD not a what's app. Maybe they would change to whats app?  I will ask them why they nominated discord.

it seems to be the system of choice amongst online PC and consol gamers.

That's is probably one of the main reasons Dicord is used, as it bridges the gap between PS5, Xbox and PCs I would assume Nintendo as well ?
They can all talk to each other ?
WhatsApp is now available on the iPad which very handy.
