Title: PP Japanese
Post by: Martin Smith on June 20, 2025, 03:18:07 PM
Just a couple of pics from BarnHott last Sunday, hosted by the Lincombe Barn Wargames Society. Hordes of the Things fantasy rules, five rounds. One player, Colin E., fielded a Peter Pig Ikko Ikki Japanese army, and I nabbed some photo's:-

Very colourful, Martin!

I've never played HoTT - the armies look quite imaginative.

Thanks. He did a good paint job, I thought.

Hott is extremely adaptable. You can use it for historical or semi-historical games (eg Arthurian myth) or 'standard' fantasy (Dwarves, Elves etc), other book based stuff (eg Barsoom) or go the whole hog and make anything you can dream up: there are Christmas themed armies with marauding trees and evil elves etc. I have sci-fi forces, others have eg armies of rocks...what EVER you want, as long as you can shoehorn it into one of the many categories of troops. Freedom to use almost anything makes it unique, perhaps.
And it's a fun and clever system to play...bonus.👍🏼

I have earmarked some of my 15mm Italian Wars chaps to have a go with some Leonardo machines.

Thats one of the beauties of the HOTT rules. You can use almost anything as long as its clear what type of troops they are.

AK 47 has that ability too ? As long as a base is defined as a type that what it is !
The figures do look great by the way.

I have played a lot Of HOTT and enjoyed it.I would enjoy it more if it were gridded. The short move distances and shuffling tolerances were the problem for me.
The concept is another work of genius by Phil Barker.

As things stand, I'm only likely to play DBA and HoTT as non gridded games. Both are very quick and interesting games.

Agreed Sean. I don't think I will be interfering with HOTT.
I do prefer HOTT with two compatible armies.  Aliens V aliens fine or evil goblins v armoured humans.

I've tried DBA as a gridded game, as published by one of the DBA regulars..it worked REALLY well. It removed all the fiddliness that martin alluded to, and was a joy to play that way. As he mentioned, we tend to play it as a virtual or invisible grid anyway, because of the geometry of the system...so adding an actual grid was only a minor change, (grid was 15 x 15, ie a 'standard' DBA board, but marked into 40mm squares).

That is good news Martin. It should allow the system to be popular in the future.

I have a 4" gridded mat that I have considered using for more conventional games, as 4" seems a good way to divide up movement and ranges in many rules, eg a pike block would only move one square, EHC 2, HC 3 LC 4, crosbow and arquebus 3, artillery up to 6, a Leonardo tank 1, etc, etc.I think with a bit of trial and error a system could be worked out. Measurement in paces is not one of my favourites and as a result I never quite took to the Maximillian rules.
