How about putting a few gentle undulations under the game cloth.
1.5 cm depth.
Such undulations would have no game effect, just a visual effect.
It might cause problems for templates and other flat things?
However, maybe the whole table would look better.
Some cloths might not fall nicely over these undulations.
Would this be a good experiment?

No.

😂🤣😅
Cogent and incisive comment from the Colonel!
I think the best use of this kind of thing would be to represent depressions or gullies, so that they sit below the table level. But it can be a bit of a faff, and as you say Martin, some clothes don't sit well over things underneath them.
It might look good for sea games

Or Scifi games where 3D forces are invading a 2D world ;D

That's why I make a lot of my Partials 2x3 inch upto 4x4 inch to create something that looks like there is something (an impression ?) in the empty Squares?
Without actually going down the route of books and things on the floor
/tanble area of play and then covering this over ? As we did when we were kids ?
The bigger pieces in the partial department is the nearest I can do ?
I know some have looked at me when I bring out my partials sometimes ? But they do help create the visual impression that the ground between the templates does contain more than just a flat bit of grass/lawn - something?

Martin, some clothes don't sit well over things underneath them.
I think this would also apply to Australian swimwear.
Undulations would be easy to create if your table was a big tray full of damp sand.
Do you think it would catch on?
If the sand is damp it would probably stick on.
But would probably brush off easily.
:D

I used strips of foam to make up small gullies and dunes etc. as partial scenic bases. Most of my scenery is for visual effect but if you wanted to distinguish just scenics from rule-affected terrain features you could perhaps vary the base shapes... more rounded for pretty stuff and more regular template shapes for others perhaps?

I use a fleece blanket as a gaming mat for everything from 6mm to 40K. Any multi based stand of figures handles the small undulations I put under the mat. I don't put anything higher than 25mm (as my hill sections are made from 25mm blue foam). As long as you have the ability to delineate zones it works fine..
It is really nice to see scenery that looks nice. Well done.
