Title: Welsh troops
Post by: martin goddard on March 01, 2025, 10:35:14 AM
Do you have any specifically welsh figures or armies?
The Welsh feature in LONGSHIPS, but I have not built an army. Shame on me.

Dydd gwyl Dewi hapus. That's what happens when you grow up in Wales and March 1st rolls around. A Welsh army simply requires Dark Age style warriors with bare legs or short Roman style leggings, both under a knee length tunic. Wealthy individuals would have a mail tunic and helmet. Shield designs could be crosses, Celtic knots or chi-rho. Most infantry would be armed with spears or bows. There would be some pony mounted cavalry. A king or lord would have some armoured retainers, but most would be unarmoured cavalry. Some men would wear cloaks. Clothing could also feature Celtic check or criss-cross patterns (not tartan).Unfortunately there are currently hardly any figures in the Peter Pig ranges that fit the above description. However, the Celtic crosses and the looters featuring a bishop might be useful. Tunic and bare legs would work for Welsh, Irish and Scots, so maybe some generic bare legged figures to bolster the Dark Age range would fit the bill.

I have some Welsh archers mixed into my WotR armies, particularly the Tudors and Lancastrians.

A day late replying, spent St David's day at Hammerhead 🙂🎲🎲🎲.

I have (inevitably) three small DBA armies of Welsh, early,  later South and later North Welsh. In DBA the early bunch are mostly javelin armed 'warband', fierce but brittle. The South Welsh, post-Norman contact, are mainly longbows, while the North Welsh go for long spears. My lot are by Feudal Castings, which migrated to the US a few years ago.

I've also recently painted up a South Welsh DBA army, as a prize for next month's Alton DBA. These were a mix of (very old, but decent sculpt) Minifigs, bulked out with Donnington and Baueda.

Ooh - very exciting!

I'd have thought the Saxons and Vikings probably already cover the Armoured and Generals?

So we'd be focusing on the skirmishers, Levy and Unarmoured?

Sounds about right Simon. Too far off at the moment though. I have just started to work on the Romans.
