Having returned to PITS for the first time in a few years I ended up getting a few bits wrong.
I was interested in the scenery section on my reread.
I can see that there are some compulsory bits that have to be taken:
2 brush
1 rocky outcrop
1 depression
All good. However, from a game perspective, I can see no distinction between brush and rocky outcrops (and marsh for that matter!) They all hide infantry and block line of sight.
The description of rocky outcrops description says it gives a good vantage point. But from what I can see no advantage is conferred. The only difference is aesthetic from what I can tell.
Looking back at the original rules, brush only slowed down mounted and guns so infantry moved through it without penalty. Also only infantry gained cover in it, so guns recieved no cover, whereas rocky outcrops sid give cover amd impeded all troop types.
Interestingly some scenery couldn't be removed. Rocky outcrops couldn't be removed whereas Bush could.
Marsh was a new scenery type in the Gordon's Alive edition and again provides cover for infantry and blocks line of sight
Any thoughts, comments, ideas or suggestions?

Nah - no imagination or original thoughts today, sorry ;)

Well yes.
What changed ?
Marsh, Rocky cover and rough ground, gives cover and can block LOS ?
But in PBI these now don't ?

Oh well.
I'll go and sit on the verandha with a cup of char and mull things over.
Miles,
I understand that scenery has different impacts in different periods.
Scenery is unique in PITS as it can appear amd disappear. Players are given a choice of differing types and have to choose 8.
The question was, why choose brush over rocky outcrops really?
I cannot remember back that far easily.
The rocky outcrop cannot be removed under "remove scenery item". This makes it a certainty when planning unit moves and shifts.
Maybe something for the gridded rewrite?

That may be it Martin, but from reading I think that's a first edition thing. I may have missed it of course in Gordon's Alive.
Of course, there's nothing stopping me implementing a little tweet or two. Or writing an article for the Mill.
It would fit a gridded version most certainly with the likes of Vietnam and Vikings as good templates to work from.
Regardless of the above, Patrols in the Sudan is a great game, and looks wonderful on the table.
