Title: Battle for Berlin May 10th
Post by: Stewart 46A on February 12, 2025, 06:43:01 PM
We have been discussing a Berlin game, race for the Reichstag
Planned for Saturday May 10th at Entoyment

Rule set PBI 2025
With some house rules

Basic ideas
12x8 ft table
Turn Countdown starts at 50

3 Russian forces (500 points)

3 German forces (350 points)

Reinforcements
Russian - each destroyed platoon armour or infantry into reinforcements roll 6 D6
3+ for infantry 5+ for armour

German - each destroyed infantry platoon roll 8 D6 , 3+ to return placed in any square at two bases per square

Objective for the Russians to reach the Reichstag and plant a flag
So only one Russian unit can win

Some ideas
All squares counts as very rough due to the blasted and bombed area
So 3Ap to move a square

The Tiergarten and open space in front of the Reichstag count as rough ground with partial cover 2Ap to move

Flak tower off table can engage Russian force crossing the Moltke bridge
Ap 12 HE 2, German asset and can fire every German turn

3 attack routs for the Russians
From the West through the Tiergarten this route partial blocked by a flooded tank ditch

NW across the Moltke bridge partial blocked by a lake

NE across the Kronprinzen bridge

All bridges heavily  fortified so strength of 15
All hits for, HE roll a D6 for damage German player can ask for re-roll

All buildings heavily fortified so Germans ignore first 6 from shooting and assaults

Colin has built/building the Reichstag

We will need
buildings to represent the government area
River Spree
Two Bridges with blockages

I think We can muster enough figures

This does sound like a great project Stewart.

Here are some thoughts from me. It will be good to see how others  think too.
I am not leading on this project so my thoughts are not that important.

Lots (too many?) of special rules mentioned here. Each one might need play testing which is probably not possible or practical? It will change PBI a lot.
The flak towers are not of much use when the Russians are in Berlin as they cannot see through the buildings and depression is mostly non existent. I have been up a flak tower in Berlin. Great view of miles away places. The idea of the flak rowers was to be above all Berlin buildings and thus shoot directly at all altitudes of  aircraft.

I am happy to  contribute the following items.
1. Enough  tall housing structures for 8 or more building templates.
2. Roads, trees and templates.
3. Russian and German troops. I can work out complete companies and  put them in  boxes.

Anything else I can help with , just ask.
I will not be playing, as that many players on a single table will beyond my current hearing ability.I would not be able to know who is talking or what they are saying. :-[
This might change If i can get a hearing aid?
I may well come along to lend moral support though.

Martin I can understand you not being able to join in some ways. But one thing we found at Dorchester for the Ardennes game, we will need a command centre ?
All the information needs to be sorted, processed and put back out. Someone that deals with time, and round management ?
A time keeper and ultimate referee?
I am happy to help here too as I don't have any troops for this game ?
I concur with you about certain parts of the table won't be effected by the flak tower, other parts will be ? Because of certain features getting in the way etc ? That's why I first suggested it would be an asset, rather than firing every round ? This of course would be a compromise but would stop it from ruling the game table area ? Devastating when used but not available for every turn ? Unless you can throw a 6 every time ?
I ve got some reasonably good whole buildings that are 2-3-4 stories high as well as some taller. Some with back yards as well.
So this would be 4 tables maybe even 6 if you have a 2 dump/ready tables and a Game command centre ?

Thanks for the understanding Miles.
Do not change anything about the event for my sake, that is not a good idea.
The event looks good.
I am not going to commit to anything at the moment.

Progress so far

Colin has nearly completed the Reichstag and has a Volkstrum company
Miles has buildings and roads
Miles has buildings
Martin has roads, trees, buildings Germans, Russians
Big Mike has general scenery, Germans
Simon has Germans
Stewart has 6x4 green cloth, Volkstrum & Russian companies, roads

I have asked someone to make the Spree canal for me
I have asked Entoyment for 6 tables but Garry (event organiser) is away until next week

I should have enough Russian infantry to make a 3rd company with tanks

We need 3 more 6x4 green or grey cloths

Due to lack of Players I think this game should be put back in the box.

PLAN B
Keeping to VE Day 80 theme and end of the 3rd Reich

All forces German v Russian

PBI day with 2 x normal tables (4x4)

1 x 4x4 table with the Reichstag on ,as  Colin as done a lot of work on this model and should be used
The foot print of the Reichstag is 2x1 with out the wings

Special rules for this table
Defender - German
Attacker - Russian

Use 6-22 level on the 'Chase' for units on table at the start
Normal scenery rules except the Reichstag counts as 4 templates so thr Defender only gets to chose another two

Only Objective - capture the Reichstag and plant your flag

Players -
Stewart - table set up German & Russian forces
Martin ?
Miles ?
Simon ?
Big Mike ?

Thanks for keeping this all on life-support, Stewart.

I'd be up for a "Berlin-lite" game on Saturday 10th May, such as you suggest here.

Sounds promising Stewart.
Thanks for persevering.

Good idea not to add on special rules unless you are doing a few play tests.

Possible considerations.

1. If a player is on the reichstag table. Can the attacker claim it by taking any single reichstag square? Or is it a single labelled square. Then as defender I will just make a "ring of steel" around it. Maybe still have 3 objectives with one of them in the reichstag? Otherwise the game will be very predictable. i.e. I know where the attackers are going to go.

How about reichstag on one table and the two wings on the other two tables?

2. Normal 400 points?
3. Restriction on army quality?
4. Restriction on vehicles?

Good luck

martin :)

I am going to see how I cope with this Saturdays gaming.
If I can "operate" properly then sign me up for Berlin.

I can field Russians or Germans. If I do not attend I can happily lend those armies
