Yummy.
Italians V British.
Italians won the first game the British won the second game.
Both armies had 5 units. 3 foot platoons formed the main blob.
Game 1, both sides average. Game 2, both sides veteran.
Very enjoyable games.
Thanks to Colin and Miles.
Miles' shooting was very unlucky at the start of game 1.
The Italian AT guns were exceptionally accurate in game 2.
I think the PBI rules worked fine. Although that is easy to say as a writer.
The armies were straightforward, with no transports or effective foot AT.
Most of my advice for Colin cost him dear. But it did seem like a good idea at the time.
martin :)
Pointless frontal assaults?
John
Can you give an idea of the composition of the Italian and British platoons please? Any tanks?
Firstly. Thank you Martin for a great day at PPHQ.
Great to have Colin with us, and get to the play "final version" of the rules.
I do like the everything gets a re roll on overcrowded squares !Rifles and MGs alike ! Also the numbers of returning/oppurtunity fire bases according to class !
There is a lot more definition on what you can and can't do which in previous versions, they were left a bit inconclusive or open to debate I felt ? But are now closed which is a good thing!
Right yesterday's games.
8th Army 3 standard platoons with 2 x 6 Pdrs and 2 A13s in Support.
Like Martin said I had some crap rolls, every fire fight or assault I was driven backwards! But that's how it goes. We fought over 2 0f the 3 objectives and I lost both and could never get my forces going to react fast enough.
The first objective I lost after the Italians 3 tank assault on my men, I just never recovered the initiative after that !
2nd game. I went with Veterans infantry as I had wrongly pointed my rifle bases in the first game, so after working them out looked at the Veteran cost and thought mmmm that's change it around.
So then I went with 2 x 6 pdrs and 2 x A13s both being Average this time. Then found out the opposition had ditched their tanks ! Otherwise I would have gone for 25 pdrs ? But ha ho.
The second table Martin directed Colin to keep the their right side of the table clear for a killing zone, so made road exit objective hard to take and keep. So I had to concentrate on the other 2 objectives. I managed to put the gully long ways and give myself a channel up the table ? But unfortunately it was a disaster in that the platoon that went in there never got going ! My first platoon that went headlong into the nearest Italians went headfirst into a grubby hand to hand affair over several templates, lots of pointless assaults but eventually cornered them on an objective? Martin reinforced it. But I managed to gain a foothold. My second floundering platoon got themselves back in the game and managed to make good of the first platoons woes and get me an objective?
My Third platoon came on. I first went with trying to place it up the table but ended up rolling low so I stayed in the corner ? If I had got the right results I would have placed next to the isolated objective and tried a pointless frontal assault! And hopefully won with bigger numbers of men ?
But I then managed to turn them around march them halfway around the table go thru a wood and literally on the last go, mob handed assault and take the 3rd objective. To win the game !
Both of us had suffered with maximum casualties in men and equipment!
So a good day was had by all.
A nice way to spend a Saturday!
Miles
Sounds like a great couple of games Miles!
It wsa a nice day.
I think I have got the shoot re-roll wrong. That is for AK?
We dd havea lot of assaults. Ecah one I advised Colin to do got slaughtered. Good advice :-[
martin :-[
That's the only problem with playing some many different games in a short space of time ?
We do mix and match the rules !
But as long as game run smoothly?
Miles
I better be careful which cans I choose for lunch. Rice pudding and soup.
martin :)

I am no tactician, but if there's one thing I've learnt over all these years, it's to ignore Martin's advice of attack at all costs 🤣😅😛
But one day it will work (possibly?).
Until then pointless frontal assaults would be devastating if they ever worked.
I am sure I was there in spirit at Picket's charge, charge of the light brigade and other historical examples?
martin :)
Not all the pointless frontal assaults were a complete waste !
On both sides of the table ? You do enough of them, chances are some will succeed!
We did do a lot yesterday? With and without tanks as well ?
