Title: Colours games
Post by: martin goddard on August 23, 2024, 06:00:26 AM
Colours is three weeks away. The summer has gone fast.

Miles is working on a Monte Cassino visual extravaganza.  Lovely.

I don't think PBI 3 will be published by then so CK will feature.

I am thinking Greeks v Macedonians, just like Salute.
The CK game is ready. Stewart will be the game meister.

That's ashame.
It would have been nice to run this game next to the "start up" version !
I will try and make the Monte Cassino visual, but practical, with marked Square corners etc. A "pile of stones" on some of the Partials ?
Also colour coded ?
I was thinking:
Green Open, not too many of them ?
Yellow Partial (20)
Maybe Red for Closed ? Up to 12 Templates.
Does anyone have any other/better suggestions please ?

Colours was fun. Some of the usual traders were absent, and footfall maybe a little down, but business looked brisk.

Thanks to Mikes and Richard for playing the Monte Cassino game with me. It was also nice to see and chat with Martin and Nigel, Dave and Ben, John, Matt, Dene and the Entoyment crew.

Some pictures of the day - variously Miles's wonderful Monte Cassino game; Matt's group's Operation Sealing table and Martin's CK game of Greeks vs. Macedonians.

Those games look good. Hoping to get back to Colours in a couple of years and meet up with the Liverpool guys as well. However, I want a Dutch passport first rather than jeopardise my situation over here. Much depends on the current Dutch government sticking to the 2019 agreement.

Some Peter Pig gnomes spotted at Colours yesterday, playing in the Hordes of the Things tournament...the second pic, not the first 🙂

Thanks to all that was involved on the day and up to the day with doing the boards. 4 weeks ago that was bare MDF.
Good game even better that we managed to play the game and the Commonwealth forces won, taking 2 objectives and destroying 2 German platoons.
Some lucky and high number die rolls helped in getting going ! Being able to take the game to the defenders!
A big thanks for all the help of the RFCM team (on the day and before, in many different aspects !) there to help put a good visual looking game, and make it something that I was and I think all of us were proud to display and play in !
It may not have been a show winner, wrong scale ?
But I think in 15mm it looked good, had all the elements for a good table and is above all playable ! Very much showed how PBI version 4 can be played ?
I will take the table to a PBI day at Entoyment, or even WWW ? If people want to play a normal 400 point game ( Stewart ?) But I am more than happy to set the table up at home for a game too ?
Yes Simon was right about the show itself, rather busy in the beginning but then petered out rather quickly I felt ! I never really looked at the time ?
Great to hear the stories from people whose Fathers and Grandfathers were there too.
I think a lot of people liked the Italian war actually being played rather than the usual ETO France or other country being played !

A good day at Newbury.
Miles' Monte casino game was marvellous.
I awarded it a best of show prize. Congratulations Miles and team.
The layout was very clear and very well modelled.
Good show Miles.

There were a good mix of display games.

I would have liked to have seen

1. A 54mm ACW battle. 1000 figures total. Lots of trees with columns snaking through them. 3D printed figures? OR the lovely Britains Deetail cavalry and gun crews.
2. A naval trireme battle. 1/300 or bigger.
3. A French Foreign Legion PC Wren game  15mm. Maybe with various on table events happening.Train, relief column etc.

Just fanciful thinking, but not beyond possibility though.
Maybe next year or Beach head.

Good to see those gnomes being fierce.
Also very nice to see HOTT get an outing.
A very enjoyable set of rules.
A happy looking group of contestants as well.

Yep, a good bunch of gamers they are, and Hott's an excellent rule set for a '5 games in a day' tournament.

Wow! What a great looking table. Well done to Miles, et al.

What was the purpose of the red Crosses on the side of Monte Cassino?

The red crosses, yellow crosses, green crosses and mix of all 3 colours! Is if you read before, I said I would colour these to help people with knowing where the Squares are ? What are the squares value ?
A simple Traffic light system.
Red: Difficult and Closed Squares.
Yellow: Partial Squares.
Green: Open Squares.
As the table is a pre-set up this just made it a lot easier, especially as there is height as well ?
It just made things a lot easier on all and no arguments on what and where they were and shooting into etc.
Something I will do again if and when a do a Pre-Setup board. Whatever the game !

Guy Bowers showed a lot of interest in both games at the PP stand.
