Title: 8th June shore battery game
Post by: martin goddard on June 04, 2024, 01:41:49 PM
I am putting together a shore battery game for the D Day event at Entoyment.
The main attraction will be the beach landings. They looked great last time and they will look great again  this weekend.

The gun battery game will be more general. It does not represent any particular battery.
I have mixed in some Longues sur mer, Pointe Du Hoc, Crisbecq, Maisy and Merville etc.inspirations. I have kept it general so that the game is not a replay of history, but a game with player decided outcomes.

This will allow the defender to lay out the scenery he has to his own choice.
There will be guns, barbed wire, minefields, bunkers.
Visibility to be restricted to proximity only.

The Germans will be average and the British attackers will be veteran.
The game should last a couple of hours. This means it might get done 3 times?

My other option was to do Pegasus bridge as I have the model and gliders.
Maybe  that will keep for the 81st anniversary?

Sounds like a good idea for a game Martin. Are you going to use full armies or smaller points? Ready built of giving players the freedom to build what they want?

Some pictures would be lovely once the day is done.

I will bring ore built forces. It will be about 300 points per player.
I have not tested it, but what could go wrong?
I will start to make some scenery tomorrow...

You mean you've not checked the weather and tides, Martin?!

Nothing can go wrong.
We land on June 5th.  The US weather people say the weather will be perfect.

Can we land at low tide so we can see all those nice obstacles. Don't want to get the bottoms of the landing craft scratched. They are only rentals!

I am making the batteries today.
Balsa, lego and plastic sheet.
This is helped along by some Easter egg for me.

I will add some tufts as camouflage too.

I will update this as things get done.

Good luck on that, Martin - I look forward to seeing your output.

Incidentally, I think that the positive impact of chocolate on work productivity is an under-rated factor in human endeavour.

I need to see what you do with the Lego. I have a bucket full of it in the loft. Mainly Princess castles and Unicorns, but I'm sure I can find a military  use for it!

Good recce Simon.
Yes the bunker is built from blue Lego.
Lego is great for making a structure that is straight and solid.

Lego is very good. I also use lego to ensure corners are square. Other useful material is jenga blocks.

Best wishes,
Martin from Grimsby

Thanks
We had a good day.
There were 4 very large D day games. More would have been even better.
Big Mike ran a British beach game.
Stewart ran an American beach game.
Ben ran a British beach game.

https://www.facebook.com/Entoyment/

The gun battery game ran 4 times.
We all agreed some modifications to the rules.
I will put them all into a MILL article.

We might play it again some time too.

The day went very well indeed.

Operation Smash  V2

3 LMG
•   Assets = Surprise 6, Sniper 7, Smoke 8

4.   Smoke
Smoke = illumination.
The term smoke is used so that players who use PBI know how it is deployed, moved and lost.
In this game SMOKE has the opposite effect than in normal PBI.
It has the same pattern as normal smoke.
It has the same D6 rolls for remaining.
When present, a smoke marker makes the square visible to all.
This allows shorting into that square from and across the dark squares.
The  smoke  square cannot return shoot into dark squares.

5.   Scenery
All open squares count as partial.
2 Bunkers (single square).  Count as buildings. Destroyed if assault lost.
3 Guns (single square). Count as buildings. Destroyed if assault lost.
4 minefields  2D6 per base upon entry. No cover.
4 barbed wire Cannot enter and leave in same turn. Counts as marsh.

6.   Changes to normal PBI
1. Countdown = 21
2. Proximity vision only.

3. Germans deploy. Maximum 3 bases per square.
4. British deploy. Apply deviation.
5. British have first turn.

8.   Victory Points
British
Per bunker cleared= D6+4
Per gun cleared destroyed 3D6.
Roll all D6 as one big handful.
Dead German CC= D6

German
Each dead British base. Ignore morale loses.= 2 points.
Dead British CC= D6.

End
