Title: Day out at PPHQ
Post by: Smiley Miley 66 on March 31, 2024, 08:40:46 AM
Many thanks to Martin, for giving me a chance to play two good hearty games in the Wargames Den out back.
Both of us had 8th Army forces 3 Ave platoons, 2 Vet 6 pdrs. Martin had 4 Vickers Lt tanks and I had 2 Sherman's. As I wanted to see how good they are as infantry support vehicles. For the up coming Italy games.
I defended first game lost 2 objectives. One on a re roll. My fault I had 3 6s and Martin had rolled 1 6. I said if you were playing CK you would re roll every time ! Then he got 4 6s. Ha ho that's life.
I do like the ability to re roll on the Assault now.
Even though I had lost the above Assault I felt I had given myself the chance to get a better result. Rather than fail miserably with just the one Roll as before.
I think limiting the amount of return fire is a bit better and the victory points adjustments at the end, does give those without loads of Machine guns some chance of not wilting under the fire !
The second game Martin defended, I elected to put all 3 infantry platoons on the table to attack. Leaving my support tanks and guns to catch up.
RH side run up using a gully to attack one objective, even though the defenders launched an heroic assault on me while in the gully and lost.
My LH platoon succumb to hail of fire that stopped in the Palm trees, then I got hit by a 2 inch mortar and disrupted one of my assault sections.
But after that he proceeded to lob bombs over the trees. I need that man in Monte Cassino !
The middle platoon for the middle objective was a slog fest, men tanks, guns everything went on and got blown up both sides. Eventually 2 of my Sherman's managed to blast there way onto to the objective with one of my 6 pdrs turning up after travelling around half the board to get there.... So I denied the objective to the defenders as I couldn't quite get my spare platoon on to claim it.
Good games, learned a lot.
Many thanks to Martin for treating me to an enjoyable  day out.
A chance to catch up on the new bits and also a chance to be able to pull apart some of the rules and go through why they have changed for the better.
