It has been mentioned before that 1944 is a very busy year in WW2.
The Berlin day was in essence just a day of PBI with a background of Berlin.
Some might prefer more Berlin specific scenario overlay. e.g linked tables, overall aims.
The Berlin day was very easy to organise and did give players their own decisions on how to fight.
Is the minimal overlay enough for players?
If there are to be several PBI 1944 days in 2024. Maybe they should not be on battle days because battle days are opportunities to try out older sets of rules and get those armies back into action.
There are lots of major WW2 battles.
D day etc will be well covered by games in 2024 anyway (???)
If we were to pursue the 4 table with a loose theme using normal armies.
Here are some ideas. Not all europe.
1. Falaise pocket. German, British and US armies.
2. Arnhem. German, British airborne and US airborne.
3. Imphal Kohima far east. British 14th army and Japanese. Lots of jungle.
4. Bagration. Eastern front. Germans and Russians.
Thoughts on dates (other Saturdays or Sundays), structure (detailed or loose), armies (do we have enough for each day?)
martin :)
I think yesterday worked very well, thanks, Martin.
Certainly while we're playtesting, loose and easy seems like the way to go.
Saturdays are much easier for me personally. Have Germans, will travel (family commitments permitting).
I can bulk out myvGermans a little more, but won't get my Japanese finished this year in time for Burma.
Simon
Ben would be up for taking part. He really enjoyed yesterdays gaming.

Agreed that there is a lot of scope in 1944. Germans v US/British/Canadians in NW Europe, south of France and Italy, British/US/Australians v Japanese in the Far East, or Russians v Germans/Finns/Rumanians in the East of Europe.
I can supply most armies and happy to lend them out. I can also do a table (as I found out yesterday) but not for the far east.
I agree with Simon about keeping the arrangements fairly loose.
John
I will run some thongs up the flagpole and see who salutes them??
martin :)
Not sure about saluting thongs, but looking forward to seeing the ideas.
Simon
Oops!

Casino (a selected corner of !)and Villers Bocage (actually in the town) and the "battle of Nuenen" band of brothers but this is more of a show game ?
These are other areas we could look at ? Infantry games with tanks and things in support, rather than tanks with infantry?
Miles
The forthcoming battle days are
March 16th Vietnam 3 tables
April 11th D day?
May 11th SCW
June 8th D day at Nothe??
July 13th ?
August 10th ?
September 7th
October 12th
November 9th
WWW event at George hotel??
Because a lot of us enjoy and own PBI I think we can slip in a couple of extra Saturdays of themed PBI?
I propose we use 9th and/or 23rd March for a PBI day. Saturdays at Entoyment assuming they do not have a full event on.
If anyone goes for either of these I will set up a discussion about it.
martin :)
I can't do any of the March dates nor July or September. All the rest have things pencilled in on my diary so are doubtful. What is the date of WWW please?
John
Ben is keen to be included in PBI events as long as he is not working the weekends at the Museum.

Maybe 16th April we can do Miles' suggestion of games themed on Monte casino (The German "winter" line).
It would also be EXACTLY 80 years on from that campaign.
The Germans don't have any Italian units (?) They could use 1944 Germans and paras.
The other players can have a whole host of US, British and Commonwealth (plus Polish, Gurkhas etc).
1944 lists. I don't thin we need to be too fussed about historical orbits. Just use anything from the appropriate list??
To include Miles' big model might be difficult though?
We can use SCW and Spanish buildings to help set the scene?
martin :)
I notice that 11th and 16th April are "school days" so I will be working both of them !
I would love to do both days.
Are these dates confirmed ?
Especially the 16th April.
On the casino building I have yet to build it up, so give me a few days to make it up and see how "BIG" it actually is ?
Because if it only takes up one quarter of the table or less which I think it will then we can make a normal 400 point game out of it ? Obviously it would be a symbolic or stylish version of the casino campaign.
Miles
Cant make the March or May dates but all other now entered onto the calender.
Derek
Sorry chaps.I think that was a bit wrong.
Is this better?
I propose we use 9th and/or 23rd March for a PBI day. Saturdays at Entoyment assuming they do not have a full event on.

Probably can do 20th April.
John
That's a lot better.

Doing a bit of research and actually getting the model out. It will use 3 x 4 squares, about 12 squares of the available 64 on the table. It can be made as a ruin with the "Whole" building top then fitting on top of it ?
Looking at the pictures they have taken certain bits to make it a representation of the original structure so it will give you the essence of the abbey.
So if we place it in the bottom RH corner of the table then in the front two parts of the table put part of the town, then some roads, hilly bits and a couple of woods in behind and around the back of the "town" I think that would give us a stylish representation of the area, we will of course be missing the elevation?
But we can't have everything ?
I ve included a couple of pictures to illustrate the parts they used ? Also roughly where the abbey would be on the 4 x 4 table ?

Hello miles
Does your model have a ruined version as well as a built version?
If so I think the ruined version would be more historical for the fighting.
I believe the Germans had no troops in it until after it was bombed.
The fully built one would also be fine as the games are "what if" type scenarios anyway.
May I suggest that Miles makes/lays out a special Monte Casino table where in the partials and other scenery cannot be moved about. Maybe the variance can be the direction of attack? Germans are defenders after the piggy chase.
Then have the other tables as just normal PBI tables.
What date is this for?
martin :)
Its2 in one.
"It can be made as a ruin with the "Whole" building top then fitting on top of it ?"
This is the same model.
I will put up some pictures in the next couple of weeks as I start to paint it before I strip it off its frame.

That's a really useful overview of the real building, Miles. I thought the model was big, but the actual structure is huge!
Simon
It's very deceptive 18 inches by 20/2 inches at best ?
Yes it will dominate one corner of the board, but then it's meant too !
Miles
Well, it's a show game, and we need to show something spectacular!
Simon
The first game at Entoyment in April will be a "normal" game.
Miles
13th April at Entoyment I'll be putting on my
Omaha beach game
Me to work through

(I have changed it to 13th April as it is the Saturday battle day Stewart. martin)
