Title: Pairing in melee
Post by: Forst22 on December 18, 2023, 07:46:07 AM
Just checking my understanding!

You pair off from the right of the chargers unit,

Ok for first rank, but does the second rank pair with the opponents second rank or the opponents first rank?

Then up to 3 spares can attack who they like? Normally damaged ones!

Hello Graham
I think it continues round as a loop.
Finish the rank then start at that end of the next rank.

We often "talk" through the melee by saying "1st fight, 2nd fight" etc otherwise the pairing can be lost.

Martin has it right. Left overs then try to administer  the coup de grace on the wounded.

So far so good, but does the 2nd rank pair with second rank, or do you pair second rank with first?

Ie is all the damage concentrated on the first rank!

An easy to imagine his is as follows.

Pretend both units form a big cog of bases.
The rules dictate the start point of both cogs.

As with cogs, each tooth matches off with an opposing one.
Once the matching has ended the cog with more teeth choose any target tooth. This is where a weaker base can be picked on.

e.g. If both units were identical =2 rows of 4 (8 bases).
3rd base in the second row of unit A fights the 3rd base in the second row of unit B.

Hope that helps?

Cheers

Just needed to confirm 2nd rank Fights 2nd rank in melee.

In shooting all damage done to front rank, so didn't know if the same applied to melee. It makes a big difference to the number of kills!

Hey, don't get tempted to open this can of worms quite yet Martin, please!

I think we already have PBI 2020, Raid, SSPBI and AK47 Redux all being discussed at various points for 2024?

Visualising theoretical concepts - not my forte. Was thinking about using the rules for the Wild West, but that cog thing is something of a Chinese puzzle to me. At the end of it I still had no idea who the second rank fights. All a bit counter-intuitive to my poor old noggin.

No problem Ady
I always enjoy good analogies.

How about imagine a unit as a letter "U" touching another letter U.  UU
Start at the end of the two U's, straighten them out and see what lies up.

I've played the game once and found that being shown (thanks, Big Mike!) what to do made it very simple in practice!

At the risk of giving Martin more work, is this a case where a simple video could do the work of several thousand words?
