A good chat with Milesat Colours about what I have been working on. Some generic terrain and the oposing forces for Stalingrad.
This all started from a discussion with my boys' uncle who is a model boat builder and the use of palight as as building material. So I ordered about 10 sheet and 100 scalpel blades.
From there we then started looking for rubble ideas and ruins.
I scratch built the first three buildings and went from there trying out rubble mixes and scatter terrain

Using expanding foam for the base of piles meant I could reduce how much rubble it would take. Still have to add scatter rubble over the top to hide the edges on the early test pieces.

Today we have been building chimney stacks. Built from a template I drew in PowerPoint (for ease) to speed things up. Palight is an ideal material to use for scratchbuilding. One more to build later today after work and then into some more buildings
So I need three. All done and the first two given a plastic primer undercoat at lunch time

This is wonderful. Groan I tried making Pavlov's house but gave up. Lots of great ideas here. I like the technique of rolling out the Das clay and texturing it with the brick roller. I'm deffo gonna do this. Can I ask where you got it from?
Cheers
Martyn
I bought it off Etsy. There also some on green stuff world
So printing out the building templates and fixing them with repositional spray mount means that it is a case of cut and glue which speeds things up immensely with simple box shapes. Theses are slightly over scale but I just want an impression.

seem to have a lot of textured rollers that should do the trick.
Derek
The Green Stuff World ones [https://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/51-modelling-textured-rolling-pins] look good too.
I have been tempted, but their rollers are often too short to fully cover a standard 6" x 12" RFCM template.

Test prints of eye window frames

The cottages will take a lot up in a small foot print. Looking at 65mm building on a 75mm base.
Couple of test pieces. The 3x3 and 6x6 modules mean then can be used in different combinations and rule sets.
For now just going to use the same basing material as the main terrain surface and then go back and add debris and burnt effects later.

6 out of the 12 in progress. They need to have the basing material fixed with scenic cement and then possibly some dry brushing. As they were mostly burnt out I might go back and change the colour of the insides and debris

These haven't come out as I expected. I think it is the ballast size. So I have cut some more hardboard and will go back to the drawing board and try some different ballast size and a raised track bed. Colour wise it is okay I think it is the scale effect in the eye.

When making a game this grand Si you need to include an error.
That allows "bods" to point it out to you.
They are then happy and the rest of the game is allowed to proceed.
Beach head show February 2023?
martin :)
So a bit of trial and error. V3 on the left, V2 on the right which had wood detail that was wasted compared to the originals. Still 12mm track width but apparently Russian main line track was equivalent to about 15mm. Not going to change as the new lengths will be theatre generic.

Made 6 modules today and just placed them inside the components made this morning (waiting in more foam to finish the 3 new sections) and placed on a 4' wide board to get a better impression. At least another 6 drop in modules to be made up and then it all needs to get (re)painted with plastic primer once the windows have all been added.

I like the idea of the brick cladding. Is that standard railway modelling cardboard sheet?

Hi, no it is textured wall paper with a brick print.
I like the industrial way in which you're addressing these industrial buildings, Si!
Simon
Quick piece added before heading off to rugby

And what the brick sheets look like.

Very effective brickwork, and very neat workmanship!
Simon
This looks great. Okay so your using textured wall paper...did you put it through your printer?

Sadly not my idea. I get them off Etsy scaled at 1/87
Most of the brick added to the exterior surfaces. Haven't decided if I will do the interiors as well or just paint them with a stone grey/cement colour.
Trying out some filler on the exterior

This week we move onto domestic buildings and apartment blocks.
Template done, need six of these. Pain in the proverbial to cut out and I need to work out if I want to be able to place figure bases on the upper levels

Oh course if you had a laser cutter this task would be easy :)
Sorry to be Mr ask loadsa questions but I am being inspired by this thread. I did try building Pavlov's house which of course is an apartment block but abandoned it. I just didn't get the windows in the correct proportion. And there are a lot of windows..
With the Esty Brick card did you buy the download and print it yourself? There seems to be lots of sellers here.
Of course should you send me the above file (dxf) I'd be happy to laser cut it out for you....2mm MDF? Which I've got lots of.

After trying to cut that out earlier today I could be sorely tempted to take you up in the offer.

And as I now have a laser cutter :)

Cut to about 1mm depth at 50% power and then cut out with a scalpel. Took about 20 mins including the laser bit so I should be able to quickly cut the 11 panels I need this week/weekend.
Seriously in need of a new respirator.
So today is about the blood sweat and tears that go with building stuff.
First off is the blood
(https://i.postimg.cc/NKcx0mfc/IMG-2122.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/NKcx0mfc)
Ouch!
Let no-one ever say this is a bloodless hobby...
Simon
Sweat and tears however are ameliorated by tools

Very impressive, and hopefully worth the spilt blood!
It's great to see what can be achieved with the technology nowadays: I'm just waiting for the figure-painting robot to come out :)
Simon
Used the extra hour to start the distressing phase.

It's wonderful what you can achieve with that cutter and a bit of organisation. The "distressing" process is adding another dimension to the whole thing.

This is great stuff, Si, and coming on a treat!
Simon
Thanks for the encouragement.
All glued together and undercoated. False floor added. PVA and brickwork next and then think about the rest of the walls and the second floor. By the time the building was assaulted it had taken a pounding from SiG33Bs but not enough to breach the walls so might just add damage around the windows.
Need to do the front steps, columns and balustrade. Once all the brickwork is on
