The rules are a little changed.
The 5 wounds allows the musketeer more life span.
I think they are about done?
Awaiting the dead figures.
martin :)
This sounds like it will be fun to paint and play.
Thanks Andy.
It will fill the odd 20 minutes at club nights for many . I hope.
martin :)
Martin,
I have a few comments / queries on Riposte v26 (dated 23rd August), which I think is the latest one.
Page 3:
- 5D6 are now rolled per player for the scenario (which I think is intended, but not updated elsewhere)
- The Red Castle: is this Guards' +1D6 modification applicable on every turn (I think it is, but we should perhaps say so)?
- The Tunnels of Moira: is the +1D6 for the "number of guards" roll similarly applicable on every occasion?
Page 4:
3. The Scenario
- in the example provided, 6D6 are still used (i.e. this section all needs updating for 5D6, as per Page 3)
- 6 successes would be for the Tunnels of Moira, not The Red Castle
6. Game Setup
- now just 5D6 for 'Setting the scene'
- "passages" should be singular when the Musketeer places it
- "event" not "evenet"
Page 5:
- it's not explicitly stated, but presumably the "1" section (only) of a new passage can be placed on the 3, 6 or 9 of the preceding section?
Page 6:
9. Guards
- it would be useful to state here that it's the first Guard that's placed at the defined distance from the Musketeer, and that any subsequent Guards are placed behind the previous one, or lost (i.e. if there's no more room to place them). On first reading this section, it seemed that all Guards needed to be placed in the same section. This point is currently not cleared up until paragraph 15. New Guards on page 11 (and which arguably overlaps the content of this paragraph 9)
10. Phrases
- 'I am hurt' would be better rendered as 'Je suis blessé' ["tué" means "killed"]
- typo in the brown trousers: should be "pantalon"
Page 8:
11. Game turn sequence
I'm afraid that I found this whole section utterly incomprehensible - I suggest padding it out with a few more words of explanation
Page 9:
13. Movement
- Presumably combat is allowed if the movement is interrupted by an enemy (i.e. you don't need to land exactly on the opponent's section)?
- incomplete sentence in "Cannot move through guards with not."
- "If no guards present" - are the two references to "3, 6, 9" both saying the same thing, or is there a nuance that I'm missing (if the former, I suggest removing the repetition)
- Guards 4th bullet: "cause" should be "causes"
Page 10:
14. Events
- it should be "L'obstacle" [the "e" in "Le" disappears when followed by a vowel] - also needs correcting on playsheet
- the "1=" in the last line of the table is, a little confusingly, in bold text: suggest this is removed [also on playsheet]
- playsheet states pistol is lost "forever": suggest adding this word to the rules themselves too
Page 11:
16. Shooting
- probably worth stating for the avoidance of doubt that, if a pistol explodes then it's the shooter and not the target who is injured / killed?
Page 12:
17. Push past
- should be "Push past" in the first line
- the reference to "figures are in face touching sections" is confusing, given that there can "now" be a gap between Musketeer and Guard of up to 2 sections at the start of the turn (first bullet point) - suggest removing this second bullet point altogether
Page 13:
18. Fighting
- does the Musketeer also get a +1 if Attacker (i.e. as stated on the playsheet)?
Page 14:
After a fight: if a live losing opponent is moved out of the section of the fight:
- can the "default" position (if no other figures are around) be either side of the fight square?
- if there are other figures around, do they get pushed back, or does the losing figure have to "hop over" them?
- if there's a situation with no figures on one side, and figures present on the other, should the loser move always to the "no figures" side?
- etc.!
Page 15:
20. Game end
- Paragraph 2 on page 2 states that there are 3 ways to end the game, not the two ways stated here
- are Victory Point re-rolls by category (line in the table) or all rolled scores by a player?
- I think we're missing a narrative table, to describe the difference in Victory Points:
- could be three levels of: "Draw", "Minor Success", "Major Accomplishment", with appropriate bands of points
- Musketeer narratives could, respectively, be something like:
- "Buckles were swashed, and honour served"
- "Congratulations - the Cardinal will certainly think twice before taking on the King's Musketeers so lightly"
- "A major feat of arms - dead or alive, your name will live forever in the annals of the Kingdom of France"
- Guards narratives could, by level, be something like:
- "Guards - you have done your duty"
- "The Cardinal is most pleased that you have given those upstart Musketeers a bloody nose"
- "Medals all round - you have well and truly given those Musketeer dogs a thrashing"
- ideally, these narratives would of course be nuanced by Scenario, too...

Some more questions, please, Martin:
- does a fight end a figure's turn, or can it make multiple attacks if is still has points left (we have been playing that multiple attacks are possible)?
- we assume movement has to be in a single direction (i.e. no jigging back and forth) unless "bouncing" off a passage end wall, but I don't think this is stated
- we have been playing that it's possible for the Musketeer to temporarily retreat into a previous passage: is this OK (i.e. as long as he doesn't try to place any new passages off this "old" one)?
- when "pushing past" a Guard, are the initial "up to two" sections of separation a free move for the Musketeer (i.e. as the 0-2 sections afterwards are) or do they each have to be paid for as in normal movement?
- Page 13 states that there are a maximum of 5 wounds on a Musketeer, but pages 2 and 15 state that the game stops once the Musketeer has 5 wounds. So should page 14 state that there can be a maximum of 4 wounds...?
- it becomes obvious when playing through, but it might be worth stating that newly-arrived Guards contribute to the dice thrown by the Cardinal's cronies at the start of their turn?
Simon
Thanks for the good feedback Simon. I will process it this week. I have been busy moving my daughter to a different house
martin :)
Are amendments now complete? (Given that any signed-off complete rules will still have errors/omissions/need for claifications etc!) or is there a cut-off date for the next version?
Bankinista
I have yet to do the updates.
Never fear I will get it done.
Spent time in hospital today with a poorly eye.
martin :(
Sorry to hear about your eye, Martin.
No rush on getting these rules all sorted - look after yourself!
Simon
Thanks Simon :(
Martin,
Hope the eye issue wasn't caused by or will effect figure production! At the end of the day though, your health is what matters and if that means a rest for a while, so be it.
Bankinista
Thanks
martin :(
I have set out V28.
Still some more of Simon's updates to add but that is all I can manage today
martin :)
Thank you Martin.
